Wednesday, January 2, 2008 Kyrgyzstan: New Prime Minister Makes Economy A Priority By Bruce Pannier Kyrgyzstan – The New Kyrgyz Prime Minister Igor Chudinov during an interview with RFE/RL| in Bishkek, 28Dec2007 (RFE/RL) New Prime Minister Igor Chudinov, with a career spent in energy and industry, has vowed to boost Kyrgyzstan's stagnant economy -- particularly in key sectors such as farming, minerals and gold, and a fledgling tourism industry that has recently dubbed the country "the land of Santa Claus." President Kurmanbek Bakiev's Ak-Jol (Best Path) Party appointed Chudinov, a former industry and trade minister, as prime minister on December 24. The party stormed to victory in parliamentary polls on December 16 that were criticized by both the opposition and Western monitors as falling short of international standards. A group of 650 Muslim pilgrims that had in it Chechens, Ingushes and Dagestanis boarded ships bound for Sochi on Wednesday night.
Some pilgrims boarded the Princes Victoria ship, which had arrived in Trabzon the day before. The body of Khalid Aliyev, a Chechen Muslim pilgrim, was also sent on the same ship three days after he died of a heart attack. Other pilgrims went to Sochi after they boarded two separate ferryboats, called Eurasia and Erke. (Agency Caucasus)

According to a budget proposal adopted in the Karachai-Cherkessi parliament, the administration will organize cultural, religious, military ceremonies and sports games for Kazakhs to attend. Officials said that future organizations of ceremonies and games would reinforce the spiritual side of Kazakhs, gain them a sense of aim and make them culturally stronger.
The 2002 statistics say that there are 2051 Kazakhs living in Karachai-Cherkessia. Most Kazakhs chose Zelenchuk and Urup as places to live in. The Kazakh Affairs Office, a sub-organization of Karachai-Cherkessia Presidency, deals with problems facing Kazakhs. It has Pavel Zaporojtse as its head manager. KU/ÖZ/FT
