Distributed by the Presidential Press Service of the Russian Federation May 18, 1994. Text of ITAR-TASS
Dear compatriots!
Events more than a century ago brings us back to distant years, when the struggle for the Caucasus faced the interests of the Russian Empire, Britain, France, Iran and Turkey. All these states have their share of responsibility for the suffering the fate of the mountain peoples. Echoes of the Caucasian war, which had brought more casualties and material losses, still a pain in the hearts of many Russians. May God rest in peace those who have fallen on the battlefield, lost his life on the atrocities of war and those who, being forced to leave the Fatherland, died in exile, experiencing grief country. Let the memory of those long tragic events are kept in the hearts of children and serves as a warning to us all from further tragedies. In different historical periods, depending on the political situation, the Caucasus war 20-60-ies of the XIX century, was assessed and highlighted in various ways.At the present time, when Russia builds the rule of law and recognizes the priority of human values, it is possible objective interpretation of the events of the Caucasian war as courageous struggle of the peoples of the Caucasus, not only for survival in their homeland, but also for the preservation of indigenous culture, the best features of national character. The problems we inherited from the Caucasian War, and, in particular, the return of the descendants of Caucasian immigrants to their historic homeland, should be addressed at the international level through negotiations with all interested parties. Dear compatriots! In our minds, Russia and the Caucasus have become inextricably-related concepts, one can not be imagined without the other. In Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, a monument to Mary Temryukovne on which are engraved the words: "Forever with Russia". These words are sacred and dear to every Russian.I am sure that unity in building a democratic state, public and international harmony, civil peace would be a true guarantee that evaluation of the best representatives of Russia and the Caucasus for the welfare and prosperity of the peoples of our country will become a reality. Boris Yeltsin
