The chief Russian dissident Vladimir Bukovsky told about the situation in the KGB Russia on eve of its collapse:
"On 11 December, the Kremlin's directors showed us at the Manezh Square in Moscow another horror story designed to scare us and make them more acceptable for us - as the only "defenders" from the "wild" people.
It's time to get used to such performances. I'm not talking about the Pamyat society that played the same role at the dawn of Perestroika, or the "lawyer's son" Edelstein (Zhirinovsky). (When asked about his ethnic origín, the KGB officer "Zhirinovsky" replied that is a "lawyer's son" - KC)-
Some eleven years ago, the same farce was played by our KGB masters with the apartment bombings in Moscow and the start of a new Chechen war. Everybody was scared, forgetting that "the hand of strong government" will first grasp his own throat.
But the Kremlin dreamers have not learned anything, forgetting that the situation they created could run out of their control.
"Perestroika" (the first series, Perestroika 1 -KC), a giant operation by the KGB, ended with a very big "geopolitical catastrophe" for them.
A "short victorious war" in the Caucasus does not end with a victory - on the contrary, it covered already the entire North Caucasus.
But liberal intellectuals trust Medvedev. They trusted Molotov, Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Gorbachev. When are we going to cease experiencing a sacred awe in respect to another imposter?
We have neither the president nor the government, nor the parliament, nor the elections, nor courts, nor free press. There is a large concentration camp, and there is the godfather, with whom nobody should collaborate in any form. This power should be surrounded with a cordon sanitaire by non-participating and non-recognizing".
It is to be recalled that earlier, in an interview to KGB website Agentura (The Agents), Bukovsky forecast that Russia would collapse into 7 parts.
