An Estonian weeklyEesti Ekspresspublished on Friday information from a secret cable by the U.S. Embassy in Estonia, revealed by Wikileaks, noting that the embassy turned to a place where Estonian politicians constantly come to complain about Russia.
The newspaper mentions Estonian politicians, among whom reins an "eloquent total disbelief in the improvement of relations with Russia". In particular, the cable quotes statements by the Director of the Russian Department in the Estonian Foreign Ministry, Mart Volmer, who said that establishing good relations with Russia was an "unrealistic goal".
An adviser to the Estonian Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Kyullike Sillaste-Elling, complained to the U.S. Embassy that local politicians feared to establish normal relations with their Russian counterparts.
"Any effort by the PM Andrus Ansip to engage in direct relations with either Putin or Medvedev would lead to a significant criticism from political rivals, regardless of the outcome", the leaked cable said.
"Normally pragmatic Estonian politicians become particularly uncompromising on the issue of the Estonian Border Treaty with Russia" (bloody Russians annexed in 1947 territories which they recognized as Estonian in an Estonian-Russian Border Treaty of 1920 - KC) , the U.S. embassy reported to Washington.
The most uncompromising position was taken by Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who advocates a "firmer uniform position by the NATO and the EU towards Russia", - the Estonian weekly reported.
Publicly, the President suggested to the NATO to develop a clear strategy with regard to "belligerent and aggressive" Russia, and privately complained to American diplomats on NATO's inability to resolve this issue.
He also complained that Russia was using its energy exports (as is known, Russian colonialists steal and sell gas and oil they robbed from Siberians - KC) to exert political influence in Europe, and drew attention to close relations between the managers of Russian state trust Gazprom and some leaders of the EU, the weekly writes.
The article contains comments by the chairman of the parliamentary committee for the EU Affairs Marko Mihkelson who said that that "a wish not to isolate Russia appears to be more important for some countries than supporting new democracies on the Russian border".
