Statement by the ChRI Ministry of Foreign Affairs
CHECHENPRESS, Official information section, February 16, 2008
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeriya welcomes Kosovo’s declaration of independence and casts no doubt over the right of the people of Kosovo to distance itself from the state which has terrorised it. Kosovo lost thousands of its citizens as a result of Belgrade’s aggressive policies. In the light of the new political realia and in view of the international political institutions’ tendency of adhering to the policy of double standards the ChRI Ministry of Foreign Affairs states as follows:
For the last fourteen years the Chechen people have waged an armed struggle against the most aggressive and militarised power in the world. Our people who have been methodically and purposefully decimated by all types of Russian military units is at the brink of extinction. In the last fourteen years our people have incurred grievous losses. The Russian occupying forces have destroyed 25% of our population including over forty two thousand children. More than three hundred thousand of our compatriots have been forced to leave their historic motherland for other countries in search of safety and security. The republic is crammed full of landmines which daily claim the lives of or maim the remaining Chechen people. There are hepatitis and TB epidemics; children are born with various pathologies; people who have never taken part in any political or military activities disappear; extortion, robbery and racket by the Russian units dispatched to Chechnya are rife. The whole world bears witness to the outrageous cruelty of Russia towards our people. And yet our people has been ranked together with ‘terrorists’.
There is a continuing persecution of the ChRI political leadership. We have witnessed the situation when the policy of terror used by Russia against Chechnya had spread to the territory of other sovereign states, through the use of explosives and weapons of mass destruction. We would like to remind you of the terrorist attack on the former ChRI President Zelimkhan Yandarbiev and the poisoning in the centre of London of Alexander Litvinenko. The Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov was treacherously murdered by the Russian secret services and his body has still not been given to his relatives for burial according to our popular traditions.
The ChRI political leadership has always pursued the goal of fighting for freedom and independence in full compliance with the rules of military engagement. We have always aspired to and are still aspiring to dignified peace and have never tried to distance ourselves from any opportunity of a dialogue. Our people abandoned by the whole world to the Kremlin policy of violence and intimidation, still has not lost hope for dignified life and international support. We have clearly distanced ourselves from any extremist ideas as well as from any radical associations or organisations. In the future we see our country free and prosperous, treating with respect the fundamental achievements of civilisation.
The ChRI Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to remind all interested parties that our people’s resistance to the process of Russian colonisation is irreversible. We remember the past facts of Russian terror, repeated forced deportations of our people, attempts to destroy our culture, traditions, customs and national identity through violent assimilation and the consequences of the military campaigns of recent years and we consider it immoral and criminal to even conceive of any political integration into the Russian Federation. The universal human rights must not be sacrificed to political expediency
