Russia starts investigation into alleged trespassing of Finnish skies

MOSCOW, September 14 (Itar-Tass) -- The Russian Air Force Staff has formed a commission for investigating the alleged trespassing of the Finnish skies by an Ilyushin Il-76 military cargo plane, Air Force spokesman Col. Alexander Drobyshevsky told Itar-Tass.
“A military cargo plane was making a routine flight above neutral waters from Chkalovsk in the Kaliningrad region to an airfield in the Tver region. It was using the onboard navigation instruments,” he said.
“The Air Force command has formed a commission, which will study radar information about that flight. All planes of the Air Force are monitored by traffic controllers,” the colonel said.
Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen expects Russia to explain the presumed trespassing of the Finnish skies by Russia’s Ilyushin Il-76 military cargo plane.
According to the Finnish Defense Minister, the plane flew 4.5 kilometers inside their territory in the Gulf of Finland area. They think it could be a plane of the Russian sixth air force army en route from Kaliningrad.
The ministry said that similar incidents occurred in August 2005 and July 2006.
There must be no trespassing of the skies, the STT news agency quoted Vanhanen. This is the question of air security, and it is important for planes to keep to their routes, he said.
