The Marines and police had asked the court to punish him for flying a Ukrainian national flag above the Khersonessky Lighthouse with members of the organization "Student Brotherhood ".
The Marines of the Black Sea fleet of Russia guard the lighthouse. Several days ago, they threw the Ukrainian flag to the ground and fought with members of "Student Brotherhood" and Ukrainian Navy correspondent Dmitry Sizovsky. The infantrymen told police that journalist Nikolai Karpinski "participated in the protest action and took videos of "secret installations". However, the court did not find Karpinski's actions to be criminal. In the judge's opinion the Khersonessky Lighthouse is not a "secret installation" and the journalist had the right to cover a protest action with a video camera. This was reported on May 10 to a correspondent of PRIMA –News by members of "Student Brotherhood".
