Russian marines pulled the flag down and threw it on the ground. A brawl started between the soldiers and the students.
The marines guarding "Khersonesky" lighthouse, refer to it as "Russian territory". Using physical force, the infantrymen sent participants in the action and journalists away from the lighthouse. The members of "Student Brotherhood" believe Ukraine leased the lighthouse to the Black Sea fleet of Russia; therefore the Ukrainian flag must hang over it. According to officers of the Black Sea fleet, the students accomplished nothing useful by their action. They students have set up more than thirty tents near Russian posts in Balaklava, Theodosius, Yevpatori, and Sevastopol, illegally raising Ukrainian flags at each one. "The students are financed by anti-Russian elements that seek to provoke conflict between Ukraine and Russia", an officer told a correspondent of PRIMA -News on May 2.
