Two Russian peacekeepers were killed in a robbery attack late Wednesday in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia, Russian news agencies reported on Thursday. The two servicemen died of wounds sustained in the attack after they were rushed by helicopter to a hospital in Sochi, a resort town on the Black Sea coast of southern Russia, Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Vyacheslav Sedov told the Interfax news agency. The attackers tried to grab the salaries of the peacekeepers, which were being shipped in a bus escorted by a car with security guards. The attackers, in a car without a license plate, overtook the convoy and fired at the escort car, seriously wounding the two servicemen. The attackers fled without grabbing the money. "One of the servicemen in the bus fired back at the attackers and forced them to abandon their attempt," Sedov said. He said two men suspected of direct involvement in the attack were detained. Russian peacekeepers have been deployed in Abkhazia and another breakaway region, South Ossetia, since the mid-1990s, when separatists took control of the regions.
