Crimea Reacts to Military Exercises in Black Sea
The international military exercise to be realized in the Black Sea next month, caused tension in Ukraine along with NATO-Russia controversy.
The Crimean public terming the military exercise,” a step towards Ukraine’s NATO membership”, have been organizing protests for days.
A total of 17 countries will join the “Sea-Breeze-2006” exercise including Turkey and the United States.
The Crimean Parliament adopted an anti-exercise decision, which was turned into an anti-NATO campaign.
The public, which has been constantly organizing protests for days, demand the confiscation of military equipments brought to the region in the scope of “smuggling”.
The coastal regions which will lose a large amount of their income due to the military exercises to last until the end of summer are promoting “the removal of NATO from Crimea.”
Tour operators are complaining that most of the reservations were canceled.
The staff working at the Drujba (friendship) holiday village, refused to serve food to the American soldiers who were deployed in the village.
The Ukrainian orange-revolutionist President Viktor Yuschenko termed the protests as “a provocation against the administration” as he promised to punish the responsible parties.
In the meantime, one of the active leaders of the demonstrations, Yuri Hadartsev, was found dead in a cemetery.
