MOSCOW, July 24 (Itar-Tass) - The anti-terrorist exercises Caucasus Frontier are in an active phase, with troops drilling action to block and destroy bands. The spokesman for the Russian Ground Troops, Colonel Igor Konashenkov, told Itar-Tass on Monday that two battalions and three tactical companies had a live fire practice, and units of the 58th Army, 20th Motorised Rifles Division, marines of the Caspian Flotilla and paratroopers were practicing to spot, block and destroy bands at ranges in the Volgogard region, Daghestan and North Ossetia. The Caucasus Frontier manoeuvres began on July 13. “The main goal of the exercises is to asses the capability of bodies of military control, forces and means intended for solving tasks of the antiterrorist activity of the North Caucasus Military District, Airborne Troops an the Caspian Flotilla in conditions of emergence of a terrorist threat,” Konashenkov said. The exercises involve about 6,000 troops, 30 tanks, 190 armoured vehicles, 30 artillery guns, 20 warplanes and military transport planes, and ten helicopters. The exercises will end on July 27.
