Brzezinski predicts problems for Russia 02.08.2005 - 00:59:57
U.S. political expert and former advisor to several presidents Zbigniew Brzezinski said in an interview with Russia´s Nezavisimaya http://www.ng.ru/world/2005-07-29/1_bzezhinskiy.html that whether Russia´s influence grows or declines in the next 15 years depends on whether it becomes closely bound with Europe.
But above all, it depends on Russia attaining democracy and its capability of solving its problems in the Caucasus in a civilized way, no longer evoking enmity and fear among its neighbors, Brzezinski said...
When asked what needs to be done to make Russia and the West come to an agreement on Chechnya, Mr. Brzezinski said that the problem is particular to Russia and it comes from the fact that the Russian authorities have attempted to conquer Chechnya for 200 years.
He accused the Kremlin of killing Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov for making peace proposals and thus letting terror dominate in the region.
