Russian, Estonian, Finnish border guards to hold exercise in Gulf of Finland
09/06/2005 13:42 ST. PETERBURG/TALLINN/HELSINKI, June 9 (RIA Novosti). Russian, Estonian, and Finnish border guards will hold a joint antiterrorist and rescue exercise in Primorsk, Gulf of Finland, the Russian local border guard authority told RIA Novosti today.
The border guard services will share operational experience and test coherence and liaison procedures in antiterrorist and rescue operations, said the press service of the Northwestern Federal District's regional border guard authority of the Russian Federal Security Service.
Russia is presenting a powerful team of several corvettes, patrol craft, FSB and Emergency Situations Ministry's helicopters, an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) craft, local army personnel, St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region FSB special teams, and Primorsk specialized personnel.
Finland and Estonia are represented by ships and helicopters: The Estonian Border Guard Department said it had sent the border guard ship Vapper and a helicopter, while the Finnish border guard authority told RIA Novosti it had sent the border guard ship Tavi and an Agusta-Bell AB412 helicopter.
"The most important opportunity this exercise opens up for Finland is to test international cooperation, fast information sharing, understanding and coherence of the border guard services," a spokesman for the Finnish border guard service said.
This 11th trilateral border guard exercise will be monitored by Baltic and CIS border guard representatives. Last year's tenth Jubilex-2004 exercise was held in Finland.
