RUSSIAN BASES LOCATED NEAR GEORGIA BORDER
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov announced that Russia will establish two military bases near its border with Georgia within the next three and a half years, before the 2008 deadline for closing its two existing bases in Georgia.
One of the new bases will be located in Karachaevo Cherkessia and the second in Daghestan´s Botlikh Raion close to the border with Azerbaijan and Georgia.
Ivanov said three mountain brigades will be stationed at those bases, together with helicopters, but no tanks or heavy armor.
On 10 March, izvestia.ru quoted an unnamed Defense Ministry official as saying that the Russian military personnel currently serving at the two Georgian bases will be redeployed in three or four years to serve in a new mountain division.
