21.4.2005 13:27 MSK Chisinau: protest outside the Russian embassy Chisinau Chisinau MOLDAVIA, Chisinau (own corr). A demonstration took place today 20 April outside the Russian embassy in Chisinau. It consisted of people from various political and non-governmental organisations, as well as relatives of two people, Tudor Petrova-Popa and Andrei Ivantsok, who are being held in detention in Tiraspol.
The demonstrators waved Moldavian and EU flags while demanding the two men be released from the custody of the Tiraspol regime. According to the participants, the protest occurred outside the Russian embassy, as the European court of human rights had recognised that Russia was responsible (for human rights) in the Transdnestr region.
Andrei Ivantsok and Tudor Petrov-Popa were arrested by the Transdnestr authorities on 2 June 1992 as part of the so-called Ivashku Group. They were accused of terrorism, and more specifically of killing a policeman. Their term of imprisonment will be completed in two years.
The protest took place in advance of a planned meeting this Friday between the heads of Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Moldavia. The demonstrators intend to appeal to the presidents of the five states to exert influence on Russia.
