Window on Eurasia: Moscow’s Bullying of Ukraine Undermines Putin’s Neo-Imperial Projects -- and Harms Russia as Well

Paul Goble

Staunton, November 27 – By bullying Kyiv to put off signing an EU association agreement, Russian President Vladimir Putin may have won a battle but he has lost the war, commentators say, because his actions now will make it far less likely that other former Soviet republics will be attracted to one or another of his neo-imperial projects.

At the same time, however, as Putin’s approach to Kyiv shows, some of these countries or at least their political elites can be bullied effectively, and that means that the Kremlin is likely to engage in more such efforts in the future even though that will further alienate these nations from Russia and undermine their governments in the eyes of their own populations.

Three Russian commentaries this week are especially noteworthy in this regard. ...

Window on Eurasia: Kremlin Fights Separatism to Suppress Freedoms Russians Still Have, Podrabinek Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, November 16 – The current hysteria in Moscow about separatism is just "the latest link in a chain” of events intended to allow the Kremlin to have a free hand in running the country and to stamp out what freedoms Russians still have left, according to Aleksandr Podrabinek.

The Moscow commentator argues in an essay entitled "Unfreedom and Independence” that this chain involves the multiplication of prohibitions concerning "the most varied” and unspecific things in order to "create a universal system for the suppression of freedom of speech” in the Russian Federation (grani.ru/opinion/podrabinek/m.221156.html).

By introducing these prohibitions one by one rather than all at once, Podrabinek suggests, Russians and others get used to the changes without necessarily understanding where they are headed, a sharp contrast to the conflict that might arise if the Kremlin ...

Window on Eurasia: Clash of Civilizations Splitting Russia Apart, Kasparov Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, September 6 – Not only is the clash of civilizations dividing the Russian Federation from the countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus, Gari Kasparov says, but it is splitting Russia itself apart, with neither the ethnic Russians nor the Caucasians viewing the two groups as part of a single nation.

As a result, the former world chess champion and political activist continues in an essay posted on his website yesterday, this division, which is rooted in history, culture, and more recent political mistakes,  is rapidly "transforming Russia into "a living corpse” that will eventually disintegrate (kasparov.ru/material.php?id=5228308F4EA0E).

Indeed, he argues, there are few good or at least likely options on the road forward because "either the peoples of the North Caucasus will” have to agree to "accept not only federal money but [a common cultural and civic identity] ...

Window on Eurasia: Self-Proclaimed ‘Russian Empire’ Wants to Give Snowden a Passport

Paul Goble

Staunton, July 5 – While the media is focusing on the possibility Edward Snowden will get Russian citizenship by accepting the marriage proposal of Russian spy Anna Chapman, the URA.ru agency reports the leaker now trapped in the transit zone of Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport may get a travel document, albeit one that is unlikely to do him much good.

Anton Bakov, who URA.ru’s Ivan Nekrasov describes as "a Urals genius of political creativity and who has proclaimed himself to be prime minister of the Russian Empire of the North Pole and Antarctica, says he has taken to Sheremetyevo a passport from that unrecognized state to be given to Snowden (ura.ru/content/svrd/05-07-2013/articles/1036259890.html).

The website of this "state” – and the site is about all this empire controls – has posted a decision by Bakov to offer Snowden a Russian ...

Window on Eurasia: Regionalists in Russia Emerging Between Unitary State and Nationalist Movements, Activist Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, March 27 – Vadim Shteppa, one of the chief ideologists of the Free Karelia movement who writes frequently on regionalism and nationalism in Russia, says that regionalist movements are emerging across the Russian Federation drawing on the model of regionalism in Europe to oppose the increasingly unitary nature of the Russian state.

Regionalism in Russia, he told the Finnish journal, "Karjalan Kuvlehti” earlier this month, seeks federalism within the country as a means to promoting rights and freedom.  It thus stands between nationalist groups who seek independence and Moscow which has deprived the regions of their rights under the constitution.

Indeed, what he and his fellow regionalists are doing in Russia, Shteppa continued, resembles the actions and growing important of "regional self-administration in Europe,” where this is "not so much ‘an opposition’ but rather ...
