Inside Putin’s Information War

Inside Putin’s Information War

I spent years working for Russian channels. What I saw would terrify the West.

By PETER POMERANTSEV

January 04, 2015

There were more than 20 of us sitting around the long conference table: tanned broadcasters in white silk shirts, politics professors with sweaty beards and heavy breath, ad execs in trainers—and me. There were no women. Everyone was smoking. There was so much smoke it made my skin itch.

It was 2002, and I was just out of university, living in Moscow and working at a think tank meant to be promoting Russian-U.S. political ties. A friendly Russian publisher who wanted me to work for him had invited me to what would be my first meeting in Moscow. And that’s how I ended up surrounded by Russian media gurus tucked away on the top floor of Ostankino, the Soviet-era television center that is the battering ram of Kremlin propaganda—home to the ...

Window on Eurasia: Russia’s ‘Surreal’ Geography Threatens the World, Georgian Writer Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, March 19 – In the past, "every country had its own map, each of which was more or less different,” a Georgian writer says, but with Marco Polo and Google, most came to accept a similar map of the world, one in which borders are clear and fixed.  But Russians remain an exception.
According to Solomon Ternaleli, "Russians continue to be attracted to the surreal hen it comes to geography and maps.  They want to have only those maps which satisfy their egos regardless of reality (solomonternaleli.wordpress.com/2014/03/19/geographical-surrealism-and-virtual-sanctions/).
The international community "recognizes Georgia in established borders, but the Russian recognize Abkhazzia and South Osetia as independent countries. The world considers the Gagau and Transdniestrian regions part of Moldova, but Moscow says these two placesareeither already independent or must become such.”
And now Crimea: According to the international community, Ternaleli says, ...

Window on Eurasia: Crimean Tatars Fear Moscow May Try to Deport Them and Plan to Resist

Paul Goble

Staunton, March 18 – The two most senior leaders of the Crimean Tatars, Mustafa Cemilev, the former leader of the Mejlis, and Refat Chubarov, the current head of that body, say that many in their nation fear that Moscow will try to deport them from their lands again and insist that they will resist any such effort.

Cemilev told Ukraine’s Fifth Channel that he and his fellow Crimean Tatars who were deported by Stalin in 1944 to Central Asia "struggled for 50 years to return to their Motherland, and [that most believe now that] it is better to die here than to be subjected again to deportation”  (nazaccent.ru/content/10983-krymskotatarskij-medzhlis-boitsya-novoj-deportacii-i.html).

Although he indicated that "a peaceful resolution of the crisis in Crimea is not very probable,” the longtime leader of the Crimean Tatars said that by ...

Window on Eurasia: A War with Ukraine would be ‘Beginning of the End of Russia,’ Cemilev Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, March 15—Mustafa Cemilev, the spiritual leader of the Crimean Tatars, yesterday told Alexander Vershbow, the deputy secretary general of NATO, that if Moscow launches a war against Ukraine, that event will mark "the beginning of the end of the Russian Federation.”

"The situation in Crimea,” he said, "is an adventure of the Russia state. It will not bring anything good to the Crimean Tatars or Ukraine, and it will not bring anything good to Russia either.” Instead, it will "lead to the disintegration” of Russia, something especially "dangerous” because of Moscow’s nuclear weapons (rus.newsru.ua/ukraine/14mar2014/dzh_voina.html).

Cemilev said that he had earlier told Russian President Vladimir Putin during a telephone conversation that  "it is absurd to define the future of Crimea by a referendum in these circumstances,” to which Putin responded "that all procedures ...

Window on Eurasia: Putin Tries But Fails to Neutralize Crimean Tatars

Paul Goble

Staunton, March 14 – In yet another indication that the worst is still ahead in Crimea, Russian President Vladimir Putin unsuccessfully sought to neutralize the Crimean Tatars in a telephone call with Mustafa Cemilev, the past chairman of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis and the spiritual leader of his nation.

In an article posted on Grani.ru yesterday, Aleksandr Podrabinek draws that conclusion after providing the most detailed reporting yet on what he called the maneuvering this week of "The Dissident and the Chekist” that culminated in a 30 minute telephone call between Putin and the Crimean Tatar leader (grani.ru/opinion/podrabinek/m.226636.html).

The Kremlin’s approach to Cemilev is striking because Moscow has been unwilling to speak with Ukrainian leaders since the ouster of Viktor Yanukovich by the Maidan forces.  On February 18, a senior Russian official met with Cemilev in Sevastopol and told ...
