I'm in England right now and unable to avoid the omnipresent Olympic Games frenzy. I skipped the opening ceremony, but the hype and the saturation coverage got me thinking about the 2014 Winter Olympics due to take place in Russia's Black Sea resort city of Sochi.

Russia's decision to put forward Sochi as a candidate host city for the Winter Olympics had many folk here scratching their heads in bewilderment. After all, the city is better known for its sunshine, pebble beaches and sea than ski slopes and hip snowboarders. But President Putin, who presented Russia's bid, cleared that apparent mystery up for everyone shortly before the city was awarded the Games.

London protesters decry 'Corporate Olympics'

LONDON -- Hours after the opening ceremony fireworks echoed around east London, up to 400 demonstrators marched through a neighborhood near the Olympic Park to protest what they called the "Corporate Olympics."

The event, organized by Counter-Olympic Network and supported by 35 groups ranging from Occupy London to ecological and local anti-austerity campaigners, targeted issues including free tickets for sponsors, missile sites on residential blocks and the ethics of Olympic corporations such as BP and Dow Chemical.

"A significant number of people in this country -- about 20 percent, according to a poll -- are not happy with the Olympics because of the involvement of large corporations about which are significant concerns,” said Julian Cheyne of the Counter-Olympic Network. "We are representing their views and making sure that opinion is expressed.

Circassia: In London to Draw World’s Attention

Circassians protest in London to raise awareness of their ancestor’s expulsion from Sochi, where the Winter Olympics of 2014 are going to be hosted and amid little international awareness of their tragic history.

Waving flags of green and gold and wearing the traditional clothing of their ancestors, a small band of Circassians from North Jersey is gathering in London this weekend as the Summer Olympics shift into full swing.

They won’t be taking in the sporting events. Instead, they will join about 250 others to protest the location of the next Winter Olympics — a year and a half from now in Sochi, Russia — and also bring attention to the plight of Circassians now living in Syria and caught in that country’s civil war.
