The Blue Black Sea Conference (BBSC) provides a forum for study,
dialogue and networking in a multicultural and interdisciplinary
environment, thus contributing to understanding and cooperation in the
Black Sea region and beyond. Young professionals primarily from the
countries of the wider Black Sea area, EU member states, the United
States and Central Asia are the Symposium target group.

Wider Black Sea Region is emerging as an important factor both in
international and regional context. The Black Sea region, once on the
periphery of European consciousness, has become the next frontier in
transatlantic strategic thinking in terms of energy security, trade,
migration and other key policy areas. In this volume leading
international experts examine the new dynamics of the Black Sea
region, including perspectives from the region, trans-regional issues
such as energy security, cross-border conflicts, democracy, civil
rights, the rule of law, and future relations with Russia, the EU,
NATO and other key actors.

This process has implications for Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia as
well as Mediterranean in terms of wider definition of the term -
touching upon traditional, military aspects of security, but equally
affect increasingly important areas of energy security and so-called
'soft security' challenges. The emergence of this region is taking
place as a result of multiple developments - the eastward expansion of
the European Union being primary among these, in combination with
important developments in the political and economic spheres in the
countries surrounding the Black Sea. This international conference
proposes to analyze this process and its implications for Europe and
for European policy toward the region.

A range of developments over the past few years has attracted
increasing attention to the emergence of the Wider Black Sea Region as
a new hub of European security. These have included the parallel
enlargements of the EU and NATO in 2004, along with the growing
strategic importance of the Caucasus and Central Asia - due to NATO's
role in Afghanistan and an increasing awareness of the implications of
EU energy dependence on Russia and of the Caspian's role as a
potential alternative. Added to this has been Turkey's aspirations to
EU membership and the "color" revolutions in Georgia and Ukraine. In
combination, all these factors have contributed to the Wider Black Sea
region being seen as an important component of European security.
These developments have also made a range of issues connected to the
Wider Black Sea Region central to the security of EU member states, as
they have brought a wide array of traditional and nontraditional
security concerns connected to the region in closer proximity of the
EU. The EU's interests in the region can broadly be defined along four
categories. These are: promoting long-term stability and conflict
management; promotion of democratic institutions and the rule of law;
securing a stable energy supply for Europe; and combating organized
crime and terrorism, including concerns over migration and border controls.

Therefore, this conference attempts to address issues that are related
to above-mentioned topics. It is also our aim to gather academicians
and practitioners from a wide background in order to create a network
that would lead to further discussion of all these subjects.

Please note that abstracts related to topics that are not in direct
relation to Eurasian or European studies are also welcome.
