Application is now open to online courses on Caucasus Studies,
including the languages Georgian and Chechen.

Course modules on offer in the fall semester 2010:

Caucasus Studies I
 - Introduction to Caucasus Studies
 - A language of the Caucasus (Georgian or Chechen)
 - History of the Caucasus
 - Post-Soviet developments in the Caucasus

Caucasus Studies II will be offered in 2011.

Online application, deadline April 15.

Call For Papers: A Symposium on the Problems of Stalinism

Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki, 3.-4. September 2010

In recent times, the discussions about the nature of Stalin's rule in
the Soviet Union from the 1930's to the 1950's and the impact of
Stalinism in the international agenda have been resurfacing, no doubt
partly because the end of the Cold War and the demise of ideological
clichés connected with it, partly thanks to the opening of Soviet
archives, which makes the concrete assessment of Stalinist policy and
the amount of its victims more reliable.

The "totalitarianism theory", which a long time was, in particular
during the Cold War, the dominating explanation of the Stalinism
phenomenon, has been increasingly criticized as insufficient and
superficial, although it undoubtedly did grasp some aspects ...

Call For Papers

Russia is an emerging energy giant. The country's energy interests are
well established in the EU, as well as gradually expanding in Asia. As
a result, the policy choices made within the context of the country's
energy strategy will have profound and possibly indelible effects for
industrial and individual consumers throughout Eurasia.

However, Russia is not only an exporting state. The country acts as a
transit point for Central Asian hydrocarbons bound for markets in
Ukraine. Its energy majors are involved in value added industries such
as processing and petrochemicals. Finally, Russia is a large consumer
of its own hydrocarbons, possessing one of the most energy intensive
