NatPress: Reference About Ethnonym “Circassian” Caused Public Interest

Reference about ethnonym "Circassian” caused public interest

On the Circassian Internet-sites they actively discuss the opinion letter of the Institute of ethnology and anthropology of the Russian academy of sciences concerned the ethnonym "Circassian”. That document appeared on May, 25th 2010 being signed by the chief department on Caucasus of that institute professor Sergey Arutiunov. The main conclusion of the opinion letter is the following:

” Modern researches prove that the ethnic identity and the basic layer of the traditional culture of Shapsugs, Adygs, Circassians and Kabardians are common. It testifies to that it is possible to consider the named groups as sub-ethnoses of one nation - Circassian (Adygeyan) people”.

They also named as Adygs descendants of Ubyhs – the people which had lived till the middle of the XIX century in the upper flows of Sochi and Shahe rivers and almost all deported to the Ottoman empire:

"The present not numerous ...

Window on Eurasia: Moscow Academics Acknowledge Circassians are One People Not Four

Paul Goble

Fairborn, June 23 – The Moscow Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences has declared that the Circassians are one people with a single ethnonym ("Adyge”) and not five peoples – the Adygey, the Cherkess, the Kabardinians, and the Shapsugs – subdivisions of that people that the Soviet system used to divide the Circassians.
The announcement came almost a month ago in response to a query from the International Circassian Association, and this academic conclusion, one that ethnographers outside of the Russian Federation will certainly welcome, does not by itself necessarily point to a shift in Moscow’s policy.
But there are three reasons that this statement will have enormous and immediate policy consequences. First, it will encourage the Circassian peoples to declare themselves "Adyge” in the upcoming census, thus undermining further the Soviet-imposed ...

Sochi Is Part of Circassia

Sochi Is Part of Circassia

It is petty to view ideas and comments that would drift those who are interested of knowledge and useful information to more contradiction and one side-minded mode that would necessarily lead to "one-way communication” and increases disagreement that compiles information to concentrate on certain ideas that are intended to be given as facts without a second thought of the human obligation of presenting the content in more logical and consistent methods, that would remind of so much betrayals suffered by the Circassian nation that would lead us to: "If you have been betrayed from behind the scene, then you should be proud because you are the only one who is in front”…

Human inhabitants lived in the coastal Black Sea area since human history was known, that included many entities which most of them have gone extinct or no longer exist at the ...

Jeff Lee in Russia: Pressure mounts as Sochi builds towards 2014

In the three years since being awarded the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Russia has discovered that building a single temporary arena is one matter and creating an entire new region is quite another.

SOCHI, RUSSIA — When Vladimir Putin and backers of the Sochi 2014 Winter Games went to Guatemala City in 2007 to persuade the International Olympic Committee to give them the Olympics, they built a temporary ice arena at a restaurant near the conference hall and flew in members of the Russian Ice Ballet.

Their message was simple: If they could bring ice ballet to Central America, they could certainly transform semi-tropical Sochi — a lush semi-tropical seaside resort known as Russia's Riviera — into a winter wonderland.

It would require the construction of an entire ...

Prague Watchdog: Hello Sochi!

Hello Sochi!

By Usam Baysayev, special to Prague Watchdog

On a colleague’s bookshelf I recently found a booklet containing some picture postcard views of Sochi. The usual snapshots, like the ones that are printed for visiting tourists to any medium-sized town. The names of the booklet’s authors did not say very much to me. But the press that produced it bears the name of Leo Tolstoy, and is apparently a local one, based in the city. Everything in the booklet is connected with celebrities, past or present.

I examined the cards carefully, one after the other. After all, it was my homeland, the Caucasus. When I’m away from home I always feel drawn to it, because it lies two or three hundred kilometres away. I had picked up the booklet, not with a thrill, perhaps, but certainly with interest. I didn’t put it back on ...
