BY A circassian in Libya Mr. Musbah Ashirksee

Salam alaikum,

I am Musbah, a Circassian (Shirksi/Cherkessi) from Misurata, Libya. I read the article that said that a group of our Circassian brothers are going to Libya to help Moammar Qaddafi against the people who have risen up against him. Qaddafi says that this is a Christian crusade against Islam and Muslims, but I want to tell everyone that this is a LIE. Qaddafi is the one who is doing all the killing. He is killing innocent Muslim Libyans, INCLUDING Circassians! The situation in Misurata is extremely bad and dangerous; many people are dying and suffering horrible injuries every day, even women and children. Qaddafi has snipers on top of buildings, shooting at innocent, unarmed civilians. Qaddafi's men are shelling hospitals, clinics, mosques, and residential areas. ...

The Circassian Genocide is a political question
  • 29 марта 2011

On Thursday Moscow hosted a conference entitled "The Circassian question: historical memory of historiographical discourse and political strategy."

In the Circassian community, it is considered as Kremlin's response to a similar conference in Tbilisi - "Hidden Crimes - ongoing conflicts", and the representative of the Circassian Diaspora in the Parliament of Georgia to recognize the genocide of Circassians in the Russo-Caucasian war, in the 19 th century.

The organizers of the conference held in Moscow State Institute, were Nikolai Silayev, a senior fellow of the Center for the Caucasus and regional security of Moscow’s State Institute of International Relations, and Naima Neflyasheva, a senior fellow at the Center for Civilization and Regional Studies, an expert working group of the Public Chamber of the so-called »Russian Federation" on the development of social dialogue and institutions of Civil Society in the Caucasus.

The stated purpose of the ...

Qaddafi Tries to Secure Loyalty of Circassians of Misrata
  • 26 марта 2011

By: Murad Batal al-Shishani - The Jamestown Foundation

Forces loyal to embattled Libyan leader Mu’ammar al-Qaddafi have battled for days to take the coastal city of Misrata. Qaddafi’s efforts to take Misrata shed light on the little known role of Circassians in Libya, descendants of the Muslim tribes of the northwest Caucasus region who gathered themselves around this settlement in the 19th century.

On March 8, Qaddafi delegated a diplomat to meet Circassian community leaders in the Jordanian capital of Amman. The leaders were asked to mediate in order to convince the Circassians in Libya to take Qaddafi’s side in the ongoing struggle for Libya. Jordan is home to a significant Circassian diaspora community with close ties to the Jordanian royal family.
An informed source told Jamestown that after the Libyan ambassador to Amman resigned in protest of Qaddafi’s actions, the deputy ambassador contacted ...

On March, 24, experts on the Caucasus in Moscow discussed the historic past of the Сircassians and their today's problems at a conference "The Сircassian question": historic memory, historiographic discourse, political strategies".

The "Caucasian Knot" has already reported that according to the organizers of the conference, its purpose was to form an expert platform for discussing the problematics connected with mass outcome of the peoples of Northern Caucasus to Ottoman Empire in XIX century, forms of historic memory of this tragedy and political strategies exploiting this memory.

Mikhail Volkhonsky, senior staff scientist of Research Center for Caucasian Problems and Regional Safety of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, delivered a report "Muhajirun movement in the context of imperial borderzone". Window on Eurasia: Moscow Puts Kozak in Charge of Nationality Policy While Keeping Him as Overseer of Sochi Olympics

Paul Goble

Fairfax, March 30 – The Russian government has put Vice Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak in charge of the conduct of nationality policy in addition to his responsibilities for overseeing the preparation of the 2014 Sochi Olympics, a combination that highlights Moscow’s growing concerns about Circassian criticism of this venue.

In a commentary on Politcom.ru yesterday, Roksana Burntaseva argues that Kozak is well-qualified to oversee nationality policy through a state commission but that he may be most useful to Moscow in the context of what many are now calling "the Circassian question” regarding the Olympiad in Sochi (www.politcom.ru/11672.html).

"Several Circassian organizations have accused the federal powers that be and the organizers of the Olympiad of ignoring the historic possession of the lands of Greater Sochi by Circassian tribes,” populations who were ...
