Lessons For Today’s Circassian Activists in the Diaspora? (Part Three)Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor April 25, 2011 02:47 PM
Following the defeat of Nazi Germany in the Second World War, the Soviet government negotiated the massive handover of many of USSR citizens – even those who had emigrated before the war. Many of the Soviet citizens who found themselves in the West by the end of the war were prosecuted back in the USSR, regardless of their status. Aslan Kazakov hails the arrests of collaborators made by the Kabardino-Balkarian branch of the Soviet security services. Davletgeri Tavkeshev and Kasym Beshtokov, the Circassian leaders of the "national government of Kabardino-Balkaria” sponsored by the Germans, were arrested and executed. The Turkic-speaking, Karachay-Balkar part of the pro-German leadership of Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachaevo-Cherkessia, was luckier and consequently avoided their Circassian colleagues’ fate, having found refuge in the United States, West Germany and elsewhere in the West ... >> full

Circassian Activists in North Caucasus Explore Possibility of Repatriating Circassians in LibyaPublication: Eurasia Daily Monitor April 27, 2011 03:42 PM
On April 21, Gazeta Yuga, a weekly newspaper that is published in Nalchik, reported on the continuing efforts of Circassian groups in Kabardino-Balkaria to help their ethnic kin stuck in the fighting in Libya. Some activists in the North Caucasus have proposed that Libyans of Circassian descent, who are experiencing extreme hardship in the besieged coastal cities of Misurata, Benghazi and elsewhere in this country, be allowed to resettle in their historic homeland in the North Caucasus. Earlier, an anonymous group of Circassian activists addressed embattled Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, asking him to allow them to fight on his side. The authors of the letter thanked Qaddafi for being a good host to the Circassians living in Libya and stated they felt obliged to pay him back. However, after some Libyan ... >> full

Window on Eurasia: Libya’s Circassians Say Qaddafi is Killing Them TooPaul Goble
Staunton, April 26 – A report last week that a group of Circassians from the North Caucasus had written to Libyan strongman Muammar Qaddafi and offered to come to fight on his side in the civil war there attracted a fair amount of media attention in the Russian Federation, Turkey and the West.
But the next stage in this story has attracted far less and yet it is in many ways more instructive of what is going on in the Circassian movement. After hearing from Circassians in Libya that Qaddafi is in fact a murder of Circassians and after being urged by Circassian leaders in the North Caucasus and elsewhere not to interfere, the original group has changed its mind.
The original offer to serve as volunteers in Qaddafi’s forcdes came from a group in Kabardino-Balkaria. It was ... >> full

Circassians in Turkey rally for their rightsMonday, April 18, 2011 ISTANBUL - Daily News with wires
Many Circassians were forced to abandon their native homelands when Czarist Russia conquered the region in the 19th century. |
Circassians in Turkey staged a rally Sunday in Istanbul’s Kadıköy district to demand broadcasting and education rights in their native language, following the lead of pro-Kurdish organizations and other groups. "During the new process of democratization that is currently underway, we, too, have some demands, like the other peoples who are also living in Turkey,” said Meretuko Kenan Kaplan, the general secretary of the Circassian Peoples’ Initiative, who read his press statement in both Turkish and Circassian. "The denials, exiles, betrayals, insults, policies of assimilation and social exclusion that have taken place during the 87 years that have passed since the foundation of the Turkish Republic nearly amount to a gallery of sins,” Kaplan said. Demonstrators chanted slogans such as "Mother tongue ... >> full

The International Circassian Council
and The Circassian Cultural Institute (CCI) strongly condemn a Russian offer to
send ethnic Circassians from the North Caucasus to Libya to assist Qaddafi
loyalists. Earlier this month several
news outlets and blogs reported that an anonymous group of Circassians in the
North Caucasus allegedly offered to volunteer as mercenaries to go to Libya to
support Muammar Qaddafi's bloody crackdown against the Libyan population. Given that Article 359 of the Russian
Criminal Code mandates that the Russian judicial system prosecute mercenaries,
no such investigation has occurred and that Russian media reports by groups
calling themselves Circassians of the North Caucasus are nothing more than a
Kremlin ruse aimed at bolstering the Qaddafi regime. ICC and ... >> full
