Georgian Deputies Ready To Discuss Russian Killings Of Circassians

TBILISI -- A group of Georgian deputies says it is ready for parliamentary discussion about the 19th-century massacres of Circassians by Tsarist Russian forces in the North Caucasus, the Caucasian Knot website reported.

Circassians at a conference in Tbilisi in March formally appealed to Georgia to condemn those killings as genocide. They also asked Georgian officials to designate the Russian city of Sochi -- the venue for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games -- as "the location and symbol of Circassian genocide and ethnic cleansing," according to the website civil.ge.

Estimates of the number of Circassian civilians killed by Russian forces in the 1800s vary widely. Official Russian statistics cite some 300,000 deaths while Circassian organizations say at least 1.5 million died from about 1817 to 1864.

On April, 25th in the town of Adygheisk the celebrating day of Circassian flag passed. As well as in the capital of the republic, it was with a small hitch, too, as the procession planned beforehand did not take place - because of the application submitted to the law enforcement bodies at the wrong time. That, certainly, caused some corrective amendments in the plans of the action, but nevertheless the celebrating took place.

The organizers of the celebration of the Day of Adygeyan flag became the youth wing of Adyghe Khasa” of Adygheisk. Active workers of the Khasa Arthur Abid and Baizet Tkhagapso on horses rode from Psekups farm up to the town of Adygheisk.

A group of Georgian lawmakers announced on April 26 about the readiness to launch broad discussions on cases of the massacres and deportations of Circassians by the Russian Empire in the North Caucasus in second half of 19th century.

 

The announcement by the Georgian parliamentary group of friendship with the peoples of North Caucasus comes a month after Tbilisi hosted a conference, Hidden Nations, Enduring Crimes: The Circassians & the Peoples of the North Caucasus Between Past and Future.

 

The conference was organized by Washington-based Jamestown Foundation and Tbilisi-based Ilia State University's International School for Caucasus Studies with the participants including, among others, representatives of Circassian diaspora.

Will the Parliament of Georgia Recognize the Genocide of Circassians?

1st Caucasus TV Channel, based in Tbilisi, Georgia, has reported that the highest legislative body of the State of Georgia will have a debate with the participation of scientists. 

 

They will evaluate the mass deportation and the destruction of the Circassians by the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th century. 

 

The issue was addressed to the attention of the Parliament of Georgia by representatives of Circassian Diaspora.

 

In March, the Circassians participated in a scientific conference in the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi.

 

A comprehensive and detailed study for the history of the Circassian genocide will be followed by the Parliament's Friendship Group with the Peoples of the Caucasus.
