IWPR: Circassians' Anger at Sochi Games

Circassians' Anger at Sochi Games, by Oliver Bullough - IWPR Caucasus Editor

By Oliver Bullough in London (18-Mar-10) - IWPR

The United Nations has criticised the Russian government’s work on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, saying it risks causing irreversible harm to the pristine Caucasus environment.

Russia has not hosted the Winter Olympics before, and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin – who regularly skis in the mountains above Sochi himself – worked hard to secure the games.

The report, in which the UN Environment Programme called on officials to do more to monitor the effects of the building work, comes after the Worldwide Fund for ...

RFE/RL: Circassian Activist's Killing Rekindles Demands For Separate Republic

Circassian Activist's Killing Rekindles Demands For Separate Republic

Boris Ebzeyev, during his inauguration as president in 2008, is an ethnic Karachai.

March 17, 2010
The killing on March 14 in Cherkessk of young Circassian activist Aslan Zhukov has highlighted once again latent tensions between the Karachai majority and the Cherkess minority in the Russian republic of Karachayevo-Cherkessia.

Most crucially, the reaction of the youth wing (of which Zhukov was a member) of the Circassian public organization Adyghe Khase underscores the fact that at least some Circassians see Moscow as a potential ally against perceived discrimination on the part of the Karachais.

The Turkophone Karachais are the republic's largest ethnic group, accounting for some 38 percent of the total 427,000 population, followed by the Russians (33.6 percent) and the Circassians (11.3 percent).

Zhukov, 36, was shot dead by a single gunman on March 14 at the ...

Murder of Circassian Activist Unsettles Multi-Ethnic Karachaevo-Cherkessia

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor
March 17, 2010 03:55 PM

On March 15, the funeral of a Circassian activist killed the previous day turned into an impromptu protest rally. An estimated 200 Circassian demonstrators gathered at the central square, next to the republican government building in Cherkessk, the capital of Karachaevo-Cherkessia, to protest against the murder of Aslan Zhukov and demand a proper investigation of the crime. The police were mobilized to protect the government (, March 15).

On March 14, an unknown gunman killed Aslan Zhukov near his home in Cherkessk. The 36-year-old father of three was a small-time businessman and popular with the politically active Circassian youth (, March 14). The president of Karachaevo-Cherkessia, Boris Ebzeyev, made a special statement following Zhukov’s murder, conveying condolences to his relatives and calling on the people to avoid "coloring the murder in ethnic tones,” before an investigation was ...

NatPress: Statement By The NGO "The light Of Khabze" Moscow City

Statement by the NGO "The light of Khabze" Moscow city

15.03.2010 – 18:50 – NatPress.Net

On March 14th, 2010, about nine o'clock at night, near his home in Cherkessk was killed Aslan Zhukov, an activist of the youth wing of the Public Organization "Adyghe Khase" of Karachay-Cherkessia Republic.

The fact that the young Circassian deprived of life by means of a firearm by shooting him in the head several times, and that the weapon which was used is with a silencer, leaves no shadow of doubt that this crime was just made-to-order.

It's not a secret that in recent months in Karachay-Cherkessia, acts of clashes between young people of Circassian and Karachai nationalities became more frequent, and the fact that regional authorities have argued and continue to assert that there are no problems, though, taking into consideration that after each of these encounters Chambers of reanimation departments of the city and republican hospitals were filled with more and more new victims of violence, ...

Aslan Zhukov’s Funeral Takes Place In Cherkessk

In Cherkessk, the Circassians and Abaza today from the republics of KCR, Kabardey, Adygeya and Abkhazia have attended the funeral of Late Aslan Zhukov. After the burial ceremony in the cemetery the group of the Circassians and Abaza from all the republics walked to the Central Square in Cherkessk, in front of the government building to demonstrate their grief and disagreement with the Russian policies over the Circassian people, and the murder of one of the most active leaders.

The Demonstration had taken place in silence, because the people did not have any technical equipment and they were not prepared, it happened spontaneously. The protest did not last for long time; the Government authorities came out from the administration building and warned the protestors, that they have received strict orders from Moscow to calm down the situation using all available means. After that, Circassians decided to leave the square.
