Greenpeace insists on changing the plans for construction of the Olympic venues in the Sochi National Park. Today ecologists sent an appeal to the vice chairman of the RF Government A.D. Zhukov who is in charge of the implementation of the Federal Program for preparation of Sochi for hosting the 2014 Olympics. The ecologists demanded to exclude high conservation value areas from the construction plans.

The position of Russian Greenpeace and Russian WWF in view of decision making about holding of winter Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi.
Russian Greenpeace and Russian WWF welcome the decision of International Olympic Committee (IOC) about holding the Winter Olympic Games <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 />2014 in Sochi city. It means that not only Russian authorities are responsible for ecological security of development of Sochi as mountain-climate resort, but also the IOC. We’re relying on constructive collaboration with Russian functionaries who are responsible for Federal Goal Program realization “the development of Sochi as mountain-climate resort” (FGP) as well as with IOC experts who will track the preparing for the Olympiad on continuing basis. The Olympic construction sites in Sochi are in awful condition, as Yuri Trutnev, head of the Ministry for Natural Resources and Environment Protection ("Minprirody"), stated at the sitting of the Federal Technical Inspection Committee ("Rostekhnadzor") on Friday, March 6.
"I'm ashamed to show these photos to Prime Minister, but I'll show them," Mr Trutnev has added. In the opinion of "Minprirody", it is necessary to eliminate all the deficiencies as soon as possible, by relying on our own analysis and not waiting for the criticisms of the IOC (International Olympic Committee), as the "Interfax" reports.
