State of Khasa” leader’s health does not cause fear

The state Ibrahim Yaganov’s health has considerably improved. Beating, may be, would not cause serious consequences. His friends informed about it to NatPress, being with a visit to the beaten man who is still in the hospital.

“I spoke with him, - one of them told by phone, - they had been beating him basically on his head; and extensive hematoma under his eye was formed. But, probably soon, he could leave the hospital”.

As NatPress’ respondent noted, now in the hospital about 50 sympathizing people gathered.

Circassian Youth Groups Under Pressure In Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachayevo-Cherkessia

December 04, 2009
The people collectively known in the West as Circassians in fact constitute four major (Kabardians, Cherkess, Adygs, and Shapsugs) and several minor ethnic groups (including the Abazins).

They speak related, but not mutually comprehensible languages. Their historic homeland comprises parts of the North Caucasus republics of Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachayevo-Cherkessia, and Adygeya, and Krasnodar Krai.

The size and distribution of the various ethnic groups across that region is uneven, however: while the Kabardians account for over 55 percent of their republic's 900,000 population, and the Adygs account for some 25 percent of the total 447,000 population of the Republic of Adygeya, the Cherkess in Karachayevo-Cherkessia constitute only a small minority (approximately 11 percent of a total population of some 427,500).

In recent weeks, unofficial youth groups that claim to defend Circassian national interests have incurred the wrath of therepublican authorities in both Kabardino-Balkaria (KBR), and in ...

Support for Circassian Nationalism Grows in the North Caucasus

Fatima Tlisova

Rising tensions in Kabardino-Balkaria (KBR) involving two neighbouring republics Karachaevo-Cherkessia (KChR) and Adygeya (EDM, November 25) have led to violence. On December 1, the headquarters of the “Khasa” Circassian in Nalchik was attacked by a group of 50 people described as well-built sportsmen. The attack happened the day after the “Khasa” released a declaration of its goal to unite the Circassian republics and create an independent state (www.lenta.ru, December 1).

The young leader of the Circassian Congress of the KBR, the scholar and political activist Ruslan Keshev, who is known for his public resistance against the Sochi Olympics and his aspiration for recognition of the Circassian genocide, was hospitalized with multiple injuries after being brutally beaten. In the statement released immediately after the December 1 attack, “Khasa” gave details of the incident. According to the statement, the attackers’ goal was to neutralize physically the Circassian leaders in order to prevent ...
