On November 19-21 in Tbilisi, Georgia, the Jamestown Foundation and Ilia State University held the second conference in the series on the volatile history and present of the North Caucasus. Part of the conference was dedicated to the issue of the Circassian "genocide,” that produced a renewed discussion in Georgia, Russia and beyond about the appropriateness of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

On November 19, following a meeting of the Georgian parliament’s committees on foreign affairs and compatriots living abroad, the parliament’s press office said that "the legislators considered that it was necessary to convince the international Olympic Committee, National Olympic Committees and the international community in the necessity of holding 2014 Winter Olympiad in a different country.” On November 25, Georgia’s Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister for Euro-Atlantic Integration, ...

Address of the President of Adygeya to participants of the "Circassian Day” in the European Parliament

  • 27 ноября 2010

Dear deputies of the European Parliament, dear compatriots,

It is with great satisfaction that I am welcoming the participants of the fifth "Circassian Day” in the European Parliament. Panel 3: The 2014 Sochi Olympics: Russia, Turkey and the Circassians.

The moderator of the last panel of the conference was Mr. Ghia Nodia, the director of the international School for Caucasus studies.

The panel started with a presentation of Ruslan Keshev, Adega khasa of Kabardino. First, Ruslan talked about the ridiculous theories that claim the Circassians left their homeland voluntarily and that all should reject them. Ruslan explained that after the year 1864 it is estimated there were only about 5% of the people of the Circassians left in their homeland and in time, that small minority was divided into four different autonomous when two of them shared it with other nations and one another (Spsugy) ...

Baramidze, speaking after meeting Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg in Prague, said Russia doesn't deserve to host the games because it occupies Georgia's territory, violates human rights and leads a war in North Caucasus.

"I don't think that the Olympic movement is something close to the killing of ...
