The Circassian “genocide” is no longer as badly neglected as it was. – An interview with Stephen Shenfield

November 2009

Stephen Shenfield, author of the famous article ''The Circassians: A Forgotten Genocide?'' thinks that increased Circassian nationalism has generated a threat perception that makes Russian policy harsher and more repressive. He shared with his thoughts on factors that may bring about a positive change in Russian policy toward the Circassians. CW gratefully acknowledges the insights that Mr. Shenfield has kindly shared with us.

The views expressed in this commentary are the author's own and do not necessarily reflect those of Circassian World.

Profile: Stephen D. Shenfield comes from Britain, where he initially qualified as a mathematician. In the 1970s he worked in the Government Statistical Service. Later he specialized in Soviet Studies, obtaining a Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham. In the 1990s he went to the USA to take ...

Appeal of KCR public movement of youth "Adyghe Khasa" to the Head of Russian Federation President Administration

To the head of Administration of the President of Russian Federation

Naryshkin Sergey Evgenevich,

To the plenipotentiary of the President of Russian Federation in the SFD

Ustinov Vladimir Vasilevich

Copy - to President of KCR B.Ebzeev

On October, 14th, 2009 the deputies-Karachais of the National Assembly of KCR had broken the session of the Parliament of the Republic. Karachais-deputies refused their belonging to this or that political party, having regarded as the paramount importance their national interests once again.

They just left the hall of the session in order again, already for the fourth time!, to show their unwillingness to support at the elections of KCR National Assembly representative in the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of Russian Federation the candidature from the party “United Russia” only because that candidate is Circassian Vyacheslav Derev. We consider the actions of Karachai deputies of KCR National Assembly ...

S. Zhemukhov and A. Bekshokov: the provocative law on the territories  in KBR will light a fire in the West Caucasus

The 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi is one of the most important things on the political agenda in Russia today. This cheerful event coincides with a tragic one – the 150th anniversary of the Circassian exile. Sochi was the last capital of the independent Circassia. Its port was the place from which the Circassians were deported to the Ottoman Empire. Krasnaya Polyana (Kbaada in Circassian), the area that will be the center of the 2014 Olympic Games, was the place where, on May 21, 1864, a parade of Russian troops celebrated the end of the war with Circassians. How to combine these dates? How to reconcile the cheerful and sorrow events? All those who feel responsibility for Russia and the Circassian world are looking for the answer to this problem.

There are two alternatives offered today to solve the Circassian issue of the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The first project implies ...

Statement of public organizations "Khasa", "WCB" and "Circassian Congress"

of KBR

On October, 31st, 2009 the Parliament of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, breaking the arrangements with Adygeyan public organizations of KBR – members of the conciliatory commission at Parliament, approved in the shortest time the bills “About amendments to the Law of Kabardino-Balkarian Republic “About status and borders of municipal formations in Kabardino-Balkarian Republic”. As a result of that there was a next transfer of more than 100 thousand hectares of the land to Balkarian settlements Verhniy Cheghem, Babughent, Bezenghi, Verhniaya Balkaria, and Verhniy Baksan. Those bills which had been passed the first reading in November, 2008 strongly aggravated the political situation and caused a wave of distress and discontent of people. Because of mass protests of Adygeyan public organizations in December, 2008, consideration of those bills had been suspended. The conciliatory commission at KBR parliament for searching conciliatory proposals on improving the situation was created.
