Radio Adiga: Circassians Standing Up For Their Rights And Cultural Identity Deserve EU Support

Circassians standing up for their rights and cultural identity deserve EU support
11 10 2010

Tunne Kelam, Member of the European Parliament

The appeal by the leaders of the Circassian Diaspora to the European Parliament deserves attention and support.
Circassians have been subjected to one of the most severe persecutions among the ethnic Caucasian nations. Since the 18th century, when the authorities of the Russian empire started massive ethnic cleansings and deportations of the native population, more than 1.5 million Circassians are estimated to have been killed. While Moscow is pursuing its preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics, it is only fair to take into account that Sochi and its surroundings are situated on the ancient territories of the Circassians. The playgrounds of the 2014 Olympics are located in the long-time post-Soviet conflict areas - ...

UNPO General Secretary Marks the Occasion of the Circassian National Day

6 October 2010

__________________________________________________________

The Hague, 6 October 2010 - The Circassian National Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the cultural and linguistic heritage of Circassian people, who were united under one state until the Czarist conquest in the nineteenth century. Circassian culture is rich in art, music and literature and has always represented a symbol of tolerance towards different faiths, which is particularly significant today when religious intolerance and violence are major threats to the world’s stability and to the cohabitation of different ethnic communities.

Today we would like to call on the international community to safeguard the cultural and civil rights of the Circassian people, whether those still living in their homeland or belonging to the Circassian diaspora. Circassians all around the world face problems to preserve their cultural heritage ...

Window on Eurasia: Circassians Increase Efforts to Secure Recognition of 1864 Genocide

Paul Goble

Staunton, October 7 – The Circassian community is intensifying its efforts to gain international recognition for the Russian killing of their ancestors in 1864 in Sochi where Moscow wants to hold the Olympic Games in 2014, the 150th anniversary of those horrific events.
Last week, Circassians continued to lobby the Georgian parliament, many of whose members appear prepared to hold the Russian Empire responsible for the events of 1864 and to give Moscow a black eye in advance of the planned Olympiad. But in addition and, perhaps to greater effect, the Circassians asked the Estonians to push their cause in European institutions.
The International Circassian Council turned over to members of the Estonian parliament in Tallinn an appeal for assistance and then in Brussels met with Indrek Tarand, an Estonian representative to the European Paarliament as well ...

Circassians look to Estonian politicians to draw attention to their fate
04 okt 2010 13:23

TALLINN, Oct 04, BNS - Representatives of Circassians, one of the indigenous peoples of North Caucasus, are seeking the help of Estonian politicians and members of the European Parliament elected from Estonia to protect their human rights and draw attention to their situation in view of the Olympic Games to be held in 2014 in Sochi, Russia, the main city of their historic homeland.

Representatives of the Circassian International Council last week handed in Tallinn to the Estonian parliament an appeal to lawmakers and met in Brussels with MEP Indrek Tarand and through him with members of the European Parliament's subcommittee on human rights.

"The Circassian people remain victim of a continued policy of genocide," the address to the Estonian lawmakers says. "The way the Russian authorities have so far conducted preparation for the Sochi Olympic Games in 2014, the fact that ...
