Vienna, January 8 – A new website is calling on Adygeys, Adygs, Cherkess, Kabards, and Shapsugs, the five peoples into which the Soviet government divided the Circassian nation, to declare themselves Circassians in the upcoming October 2010 Russian Federation census, another step toward the restoration of a common Circassian Republic in the North Caucasus. The site, www.perepis2010.org, was launched today by activities from a group of other Circassian sites as part of the campaign by Circassian Youth for “One People – One Name.” Its organizers say their effort is protected by the provisions of Article 26 of the Russian Constitution which specifies that everyone has the right to declare his or her national identity. Judging by comments already posted on various news sites, Circassians are pleased by this step. On the one hand, they ... >> full

Virtual Circassia By Demis Polandov, special to Prague Watchdog
During 2009 the so-called "Circassian question" came quite
unexpectedly to the fore. The closer we get to the 2014 Sochi Olympics,
the more discussion there is going to be about what was done to the
Circassian people (Agyghe) by the Russian Empire in the eighteenth and
nineteenth centuries (some have called it a genocide).
Cherkessia is currently a virtual project only. This is not a
pejorative description, but simply a statement of fact. The Internet
has become the platform on which Circassians living in different parts
of the world are able to meet and attempt to build something like a
national ideology. Briefly that ideology can be described as follows:
international recognition of the ... >> full

Circassian NGO Heads Accuse Presidential Envoy Of Slander, Incompetence
The Circassian organizations took issue with remarks by Vladimir Ustinov.
January 04, 2010
The heads of three Circassian political organizations have sent a formal protest
to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in connection with disparaging
insinuations by the presidential envoy to the Southern Federal
District, Vladimir Ustinov. The three leaders -- Aramby
Khapay, who heads the Adygeya branch of Adyghe Khase (Circassian
Council); Azmet Skhalyakho, a Russian State Duma deputy who
simultaneously heads the Krasnodar Krai branch of Adyghe Khase; and
Madzhid Chachukh, chairman of the Shapsug Public Parliament -- refer to
media reports of Ustinov's December 22 address to senators from
southern Russia. Specifically, they claim "Rossiiskaya gazeta" quoted
him as criticizing unnamed "nationalist" activists who allegedly
compound the threat posed to the North Caucasus by Islamic terrorism by
calling for the creation of ... >> full

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s representative in southern Russia, Vladimir Ustinov
On December 22, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s representative in southern Russia, Vladimir Ustinov, gave his annual speech on growing security threats in the North Caucasus, addressed to the Federation Council in Moscow. In listing the most dangerous threats to the security of the Russian Federation, such as the growth of the “bandit underground resistance,” Ustinov also referred to “Circassian nationalists” who, he said, are demanding the creation of “a new federation subject by unifying Adygs, Cherkess, Kabardins, Abazas, Shapsughs” –the tribes that belong to the Circassian ethnic group, currently the most significant mono-ethnic group (approximately one million people) living in five separate subjects of Southern Russia, including the Sochi region (Rossiyskaya Gazeta, December 22).
The mere mention of the Circassian issue in an annual speech on Russia’s ... >> full
