Interview with Asker Soht (“Adyghe Khasa” of Krasnodar)
NatPress: Asker Kazbekovich, how can you comment the decree of the president of Russian Federation about creation of the North-Caucasian federal district? Why, in your opinion, it did not include Adygeya Republic, and Krasnodar region?
A.Soht: The purposes of creation of such new federal district are clearly formulated by the president of Russian Federation. They are struggle against terrorism, as well as the economic and social modernization of the whole region. The fact that Adygeya Republic was not included in the outlined by the decree “disaster circle” only inspires me. We should not forget that division of the state into federal districts has nothing common with its territorial structure. The administration of the federal district is just a coordinator of the federal structures. And nothing else. I do not see any threats to the statehood of our nation in this relation. The fact that the new district is named “North-Caucasian” only testifies to some original understanding of geography existing in the Kremlin. But after the attempts to cancel the time zones we should not be surprised with that at all.
NatPress: Could the next division of our people affect its unity? It’s not a secret that many Adygeyan (Circassian) organizations put forward the requirement of association of Adygs in one subject of the Russian Federation.
A.Soht: The unity of our people can not be adjusted by some decrees even signed by the president of Russia. Over a century we have been living in different countries and we suppose ourselves representatives of the one nation. The next bureaucratic rearrangements in Russia cannot affect it in any way. As to the plans of association of all the Adygs of Russia in one subject of the federation, and I had repeatedly stated my position on the question: I do not see any political preconditions for this. The idea, in my opinion, has the right to exist, but at the current historical stage it can not be implemented. Its constant propaganda is counter-productive.
Today we must concentrate our efforts, first of all, on development of the horizontal communications, our active interaction with Circassian Diaspora. The forthcoming population census, activization of the contacts with Circassian youth, creation of the united, accessible information space, assistance to learning the native language, culture and history in the countries of our foreign Diaspora, protection of the rights and the interests of Adygs, support of repatriation and their adaptation on the historical native land. Here are the problems which our generation, in my opinion, is called to solve.
