Window on Eurasia: Circassians Were Original Population of Sochi, Olympic Guidebook Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, September 7 – Despite the Russian government’s reluctance to talk about the genocide its tsarist predecessors committed against the Circassians in 1864, a new pamphlet prepared for guides for the Olympiad next year specified that the Circassians are "the indigenous population” of Sochi and that Sochi and many nearby names are Circassian words.

In his "Olympic Names of Sochi” (in Russian), which has been published in 1500 copies, Igor Sizov, a journalist there, says that everyone should remember that "the majority of geographic names in Sochi have arisen as a result of a mixingof lnguages, customs and cultural traditions of various peoples.”

"The terms ‘Sochi,’ ‘Laura,’ and ‘Fisht,’” for example, were given by "representatives of the Circassian tribes of the Abaza, Ubykhs, and Shapsugs.” The name ‘Adler’ "appeared thanks to a mixing of words from Circassian ...

The high expectations on the part of Circassians of benevolence from the Russian state were cut short by the Russian government’s attitude toward the repatriation of the Syrian Circassians. "Even in a ‘life-and-death’ situation, Russia will never help us,” the well-known Circassian activist Andzor Kabard told Ekho Kavkaza Radio, referring to Moscow’s reluctance to allow the repatriation of Circassians from Syria to the North Caucasus. Kabard predicted there would be some kind of information campaign in support of Circassians in fall 2013 in connection to the Olympiad in Sochi, but that Russia is unlikely to change its attitude toward what he called the "Circassian Question.” According to the Circassian activist, the "Circassian Question” is first of all "the question of unifying people who ...

Circassians Mark 250th Anniversary of Resistance to Russian Aggression

Much has been and will be said about the 150th anniversary of the Circassian "genocide” by Russian forces that will be marked in 2014 when the site of that mass murder is scheduled to be the venue of the Winter Olympics. But this week marks what is at least as significant, politically if not morally, for both Circassians and Russians—the 250th anniversary of the continuing resistance of the Circassian nation to Russian aggression in the North Caucasus.

On July 28, 1763, a Russian military unit crossed into the territory of the sovereign principality of Greater Kabarda, the largest state of the Circassian nation up to that time. Over the next 101 years, Circassians resisted the invasion of the much larger Russian military, earning the respect of Russian commanders as one ...

LOST PARADISE

The ancient Circassian gardens pose one of the greatest mysteries of the North Caucasus. In the vast territory once inhabited by Adyghes – right in the woods – you would come across large areas full of fruit trees – apple, pear, quince, cherry-plum, nut trees… The leading agronomists are saying now that the trees are extremely well grafted and, despite the unbelievable age, they still bear fruit. Who, and (most importantly) why cultivated the marvelous fruit plants in the woods?

In Wilding Eden

After Russia took over the Caucasus many travelers visiting these areas were surprised to see the numerous ancient Adyghe gardens, fully abandoned, yet still yielding rich fruit and reflecting a high level of culture.

Countess Praskovya Uvarova, President of the Moscow Archeological Society, while on her trip around the Caucasus (1886) made a sad comment of this poor view: ...

END GAME OR NEW GAME TO THE CIRCASSIAN ETHNONATIONAL AGENDA?

END GAME OR NEW GAME TO THE CIRCASSIAN ETHNONATIONAL AGENDA?

In the last years the Circassian Question re-appeared across the mainstream media, especially after the 4th of July 2007 when in Guatemala City Russia won the organization of the Sochi Winter Olympics 2014. Georgia, which fought against Russia in the Five Day War of August 2008, was in the last few years an important ally to the Circassian ethnonational aspirations. However after the last Parliamentary elections (2012) that gave victory to the "Georgian Dream” of Bidzina Ivanishvili things appear to be changing.
The Circassian Question
This is not the first time I am writing about Circassian Affairs but even so I think it is important to summarize the key aspects of the Circassian Question. First of all it is important to acknowledge the freshness of the contemporary Circassian ethnonational agenda. There is little dispute that "on the contrary to what happened in the ...
