On November 12, Russia’s NTV television channel broadcast a program called "Who Wants to Divide Russia?” which listed people who supposedly want to divide up the Russian Federation. The list included Yevgenia Albats, the liberal editor of the popular Russian magazine The New Times, whom the program accused of wanting to give away Siberia to China for saying on a radio program that she did not "see any great tragedy if Russia were to split along the Ural Mountains.” Alexander Budnikov, a Russian nationalist from Novosibirsk was presented as the founder of the Siberian Liberation Army and a proponent of the separation of Siberia from the Russian Federation. Budnikov later denied the accusations in his blog (http://vk.com/id10118456).

Istanbul demonstration in support of assisting Syrian Circassians (Source: Caucasian Knot)

On October 31, the parliament of Kabardino-Balkaria approved an appeal to Russian Federation Council chairwoman Valentina Matvienko and State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin to assist in the repatriation of Syrian Circassians to the North Caucasus. "Over 150,000 Circassians live on the Syrian territory,” the appeal read. "They have experienced hardships, such as fleeing their homes. Their natural aspiration to return to their historical homeland is inextricably linked to their concerns for their personal safety and well-being, for maintaining their cultural identity [in Syria].” Thus far, an estimated 1,000 Syrian Circassians have left Syria for the North Caucasus (http://ria.ru/arab_riot/20131031/973944694.html#ixzz2jQRGN5xD).

The Kabardino-Balkarian parliament’s appeal to the Russian parliament is not a trivial step, and required significant nerve on the part of the republican government given Moscow’s annoyance with the Circassian question. Even though ...

Window on Eurasia: Syrian Crisis Undermines Moscow’s Control of the North Caucasus

Paul Goble

Staunton, November 5 – The Syrian crisis, which gave Vladimir Putin a much-celebrated diplomatic victory, now threatens  Russia’s territorial integrity not because Russian citizens are among the combatants in Syria but because Moscow’s mishandling of the Circassian issue in the Middle East is radicalizing the Circassian republics of the North Caucasus.

Circassian activists have long been concerned about the fate of their co-ethnics in Syria and especially about the failure of the Russian government to extend the rights of return and resettlement to the Circassians that are specified in Moscow’s compatriots program (windowoneurasia.blogspot.com/2008/11/window-on-eurasia-circassians-call-for.html).

The Russian government has dragged its feet in this regard at least in part because it does not want to see an influx of Circassians into the North Caucasus, something that could dramatically change the ethnic balance in that region – there are more than ...

A Statement On Sochi
The Circassian Culture And Human Rights Center (CCAHRC)

The Circassian Culture And Human Rights Center (CCAHRC) expresses its rejection and condemnation concerning the news, published recently by media in sight and sound in regard to a visit of what is described as a "foreign” delegation of 50 members from Diaspora, composed according to the description heads of associations,  activists, businessmen, workers in the fields of science and culture, and the graduates of the University of Kabardino-Balkaria, but among the delegation, there was members of staff in the International Circassian Association (ICA), supported by Russia, based in Nalchik, the capital city of Kabardino-Balkaria, which performed the arrangements of the visit and tour, for what seems to be in accordance with the incoming instructions, where the same sources added that the delegation visited the Circassian Sochi in 16th of October, 2013, which the supposed delegation "expressed admiration for current arrangements” ...
