I think this is a serious first for news. As I noted days ago, GQ spiked their article on allegations that the Russian FSB (and their Putin regime) were behind the 1999 false-flag bombings in Russia. The article was not run in Russia at all and was hardly marketed in the US. So Gawker scanned pages of the actual article in English and asked its readers to help translate it into Russian. The result? The Russian article that should have run - and pretty well translated actually. Check out both the English language scans they have up and the Russian translation. Congrats to the entire group project on this. But let me just remind everyone that about 3 years ago, I reported very similar allegations as they related to the assassination of Alexander Litvinenko. My sources believed that SVR was involved in the Litvinenko hit and possibly some elements of the FSB. But the key allegations made ... >> full

Why They Flee The North Caucasus
Daghestani journalist Malik Akhmedilov was shot dead in broad daylight last month.
September 04, 2009
A 29-year-old Daghestani who gave his name as Muslim recently told RFE/RL's North Caucasus Service of his good fortune.
Three
years ago, he said, he managed to reach a Western European country,
where he requested asylum. While his request was being processed, he
met a woman and started a family, which led to a positive resolution of
his case.
Many other asylum seekers from the North Caucasus are
not as fortunate, yet still cling to their dreams of one day
integrating into European society.
The reasons why young
people from the North Caucasus seek asylum in Europe are well-known --
abductions and disappearances; persecution on religious and political
grounds; and even extrajudicial killings. Journalists, human rights
activists, and young people who profess allegiance to branches of Islam
outside the mainstream are ...>> full

Experts attribute the stagnation to dependence on natural resource prices and uncertainty about debts held by Russian companies. The July data shows that the financial well-being of these important economic segments is still deteriorating. In absolute terms, the 9.3 percent year-on-year decline in GDP and the 10.8 percent drop in industrial output places Russia firmly at the bottom of the performance table of all major economies. The risk of a second crisis wave has by no means been eliminated, although few expect the next challenges to cause the same level of destruction that we saw in late ...

Beware Russia’s three tinderboxes
The West must take more account of Russia's aggressive mood , warn the head of London's Caucasus Policy Institute and two former US envoys to the post-Soviet space. Crises are looming in Georgia, Ukraine, and Muslim North Caucasus The United States and Europe now face triple-barreled security challenges from Russia - its growing pressure on Georgia and Ukraine, and spiraling terrorism and repression in its Muslim-dominated North Caucasus region. Russia's muscular approach could ignite sparks in any one of the three confrontations, leading to wider instability. The West cannot stop Russia from harming itself, but it needs to prepare for and seek to avert dangerous Russian overreach. The upcoming EUand G20 Summits should urgently address ways to do this. The most serious Russian challenges in the near abroad are directed at Georgia and Ukraine, two countries which seek EU and NATO membership and have some form of democracy. Russia continues to stoke tensions along the cease fire line of the August 2008 war ... >> full
