Gorbachev's Coup

A new collection of essays by Archie Brown looks back to perestroika to explain the Soviet Union's collapse.

These days Mikhail Gorbachev is being airbrushed out of history. When Boris Yeltsin died a few months ago, Western obituarists rushed to hail him as the man who ended the Cold War, dismantled the Soviet Union and introduced democracy into the New Russia. In fact, Yeltsin did none of these things. But few of the commentators bothered to recall the Gorby- mania that swept the West in the dying years of the Soviet Union: If they mentioned Gorbachev at all, it was to deride him for trying to remain true to his communist past, for bungling economic reform, for shoring up a Soviet Union that was clearly doomed.

Archie Brown is the dean of Gorbachev experts, and in his latest collection ...

EU has become hostage to nationalistic sentiments of some members - Schroeder (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Sept 8 (Interfax) - Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has criticized the European Union for applying double standards in discussing problems of the U.S. missile defense system and sales of Polish meat to Russia.

Speaking in Moscow at a presentation ceremony of his memoirs, published in Russia on Saturday, Schroeder suggested that the European Union has become "a hostage to nationalistic anti-Russian interests of certain EU members."

"This concerns the Polish leadership and the leaders of a number of other EU countries," Schroeder said.

"The EU should reject these narrow-minded nationalistic interests to get rid of trends" obstructing the development of Russia's relations with the European Union and European integration, he said.

Speaking about the problem of the deployment of elements of the U.S. missile defense in Europe, Schroeder said, "Everything is being presented here as if this were only a problem for Poland, ...

Russia: On The Margins Of The Pacific Rim

(TASS)
September 11, 2007 -- The United States, China, Japan, and host Australia took center stage at the September 8-9 summit of the loosely organized, 21-member Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Sydney.

Russia's participation received slight mention outside the domestic media, except for the huge bilateral trade deals that President Vladimir Putin concluded in Indonesia and Australia before the summit began. Commentators noted that Russia's role in the region centers primarily on energy and weapons.

On September 6, Putin and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono signed agreements in Jakarta worth well over $1 billion for Indonesia to purchase Russian military equipment, including jet fighters and submarines. The two presidents also witnessed the signing of agreements ...

Russia tests super bomb, military says

By Reuters Sept 11 21:55

Russia has tested the world’s most powerful vacuum bomb, which unleashes a destructive shockwave with the power of a nuclear blast, the military said on Tuesday, dubbing it the ”father of all bombs”.

The bomb is the latest in a series of new Russian weapons and policy moves as President Vladimir Putin tries to reassert Moscow’s role on the international stage.

”Test results of the new airborne weapon have shown that its efficiency and power is commensurate with a nuclear weapon,” Alexander Rukshin, Russian deputy armed forces chief of staff, told Russia’s state ORT First Channel television. The same report was later shown on the state-sponsored Vesti channel.

”You will now see it in action, the bomb which has no match in the world is being tested at a military site.”

It showed a Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bomber dropping the bomb over a testing ground. A large explosion followed.

Pictures showed what looked ...

A Departure From the Last Kremlin Script

A Departure From the Last Kremlin Script

President Vladimir Putin set in motion Wednesday what looks like a tightly scripted plan that will culminate with the transfer of power in March. In effect, Putin officially kicked off the presidential campaign -- the Kremlin's version of one, anyway. Those who thought Putin would borrow a page from his own ascension to power were caught off guard. And for good reason: The similarities between what is happening now and what happened in 1999 are striking.

President Boris Yeltsin elevated Putin, then the relatively unknown director of the Federal Security Service, to the position of prime minister in August 1999, roughly half a year before the presidential election. Putin tapped Viktor Zubkov, an obscure bureaucrat who oversees a financial crimes agency, to replace Mikhail Fradkov as prime minister on Wednesday, also half a year before the presidential election. Both promotions surprised politicians and business leaders.

But there was a key ...
