From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 9/17/2006 1:13 AM Global popular power George Galloway The struggle for justice and prosperity in the Arab world and everywhere depends upon popular resistance to US imperialism and its local clients, writes George Galloway* "Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!" reads the eponymous statue's inscription in Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem Ozymandias. But it is the boastful tyrant's monument, not the self-confidence of his enemies, that lies splintered in the sands. Five years on from the atrocities of 11 September 2001, George W Bush and the neo- conservatives have managed to turn much of Afghanistan and Iraq into desolation, full of now lifeless things. Amid this carnage lies another, unlamented casualty -- the colossal wreck of US and British foreign policy. The authors of that wreckage cannot conceivably claim they were not warned of the calamities they would unleash. Millions of us told them what would happen if they seized on the events of five years ago to launch what the Pentagon now calls the ... >> full

(Atlantic edition) Moscow Bureau Chief Owen Matthews and Special Correspondent Anna Nemtsova report that while the Chechen war was costly in terms of blood and treasure, the "peace" that the Kremlin has secured is not much less thuggish. It comes in the person of Ramzan Kadyrov, the handpicked 29-year-old prime minister of the new Chechnya. Kadyrov is a former rebel whom Moscow anointed as Chechyna's alpha warlord in May 2004 after the assassination of his father, President Ahmad Kadyrov. His brief: to pacify Chechnya by any means necessary. Kadyrov chose simple, violent and effective methods, backed by the so-called Kadyrovtsy, a private irregular army of close to 10,000 former rebels. Tactics commonly used include kidnapping family members as a way of persuading outlaws to give themselves up. One danger of this tenuous and brutal peace is that it will only repress popular frustrations, ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 9/17/2006 4:01 PM Publication time: 17 September 2006, 18:13 The following is the text of Pope Benedict XVI's remarks about his remarks causing offence to Muslims in his 12 September speech in the Bavarian city of Regensburg. Dear Brothers and Sisters, The pastoral visit which I recently made to Bavaria was a deep spiritual experience, bringing together personal memories linked to places well known to me and pastoral initiatives towards an effective proclamation of the Gospel for today. I thank God for the interior joy which he made possible, and I am also grateful to all those who worked hard for the success of this Pastoral Visit. As is the custom, I will speak more of this during next Wednesday's general audience. At this time, I wish also to add that I am deeply sorry for the reactions in some countries to a few passages of my address at the University of Regensburg, which were considered offensive to the sensibility of Muslims. These in fact were a ... >> full

Pavel Borodin said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that the problems were mainly connected with the implementation of four agreements signed by presidents of Russia and Belarus in January this year in St. Petersburg. The Russian and Belarusian presidents signed on January 24 agreements on issues of the countries' union property and on equal rights of citizens to move freely on the territory of both countries. Borodin said one of the topical problems was the implementation of the agreement, which regulated the union state's property. He said the requirements stipulated by the agreement "unfortunately, were not fulfilled by Belarus." The agreement regulates the property issues in the format of the union state and ensures equal rights of Russian and Belarusian citizens on free movement and ... >> full
