From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 8/1/2005 11:34 PM Ivanov Went Too Far in Barring ABC Tuesday, August 2, 2005. Issue 3221 The military and Federal Security Service must be beside themselves. They had spent months hunting for Shamil Basayev, and a Russian journalist working for U.S. government-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty manages to spend two days and nights with Terrorist No. 1 himself in Chechnya. To top things off, the journalist, Andrei Babitsky, said he happened upon Basayev by chance. Perhaps it's no surprise then that Defense Minister and former KGB officer Sergei Ivanov declared that ABC television, the U.S. network that broadcast the resulting interview with Basayev, was now considered persona non grata by his ministry. "Today, I have given the order to the head of the press service that not one serviceman of the Defense Ministry should have contact with the American television channel ABC," Ivanov said Sunday on state television. "We will continue to act openly with the press, but this channel will not be invited ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 8/7/2005 1:02 AM Russia targets media after failure in Chechnya Embarrassed by its failure to head off rebels in Chechnya, Moscow has reacted by publicly barring a major US television station, ABC, from working in Russia, after the broadcast of an interview with Chechen leader Shamil Basaev. Domestically, the move warns journalists against crossing the line in reporting on Chechnya, and diplomatically, it escalates growing anti-US sentiments in the political establishment. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced on 2 August that it would not extend accreditation to personnel working in Russia for the US television channel, ABC, after the broadcaster’s decision to air a lengthy interview with Chechen warlord Shamil Basaev on its “Nightline” show on 28 July. It was the time in post-Soviet Russia that the government has publicly barred a media organization from working in the country. Speaking to ISN Security Watch, a Foreign Ministry official said the ministry believed that ABC had violated a 1976 UN pact when it aired the ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 8/7/2005 1:29 AM Christian Science Monitor: Russia terror wave exposes weak intelligence 09/03/2004 18:32 In the boldest move yet in a new wave of terrorist violence sweeping Russia, attackers wearing explosive belts Wednesday took over a school in southern Russia, turning more than 100 students, teachers, and parents into hostages on the first day of the school year. The hostage drama comes after a suicide bombing in Moscow Tuesday night, and the destruction of two airplanes in simultaneous blasts last week. As tearful families pleaded on television, and Russian troops ringed the school Wednesday, the crisis raised questions about the effectiveness of President Vladimir Putin's uncompromising Chechnya strategy. The third attack in eight days also brought into focus the limits of Russian intelligence on militant groups - a surprise to some here, since Mr. Putin is a former KGB agent whose administration is dominated by intelligence and security veterans. The school raid came as an Islamist group calling itself the Islambouli Brigades, which claimed responsibility for ... >> full
