The Other Russia: Chechen President Sues Rights Leader For Slander, Again

Chechen President Sues Rights Leader for Slander, Again

On Tuesday, Interfax reported that criminal charges of slander had been filed against the head of the Russian human rights organization Memorial, Oleg Orlov, by Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov. The charges stem from comments by Orlov regarding connections between Kadyrov and last summer’s high-profile murder of Memorial activist Natalya Estemirova.

The Chechen president, who has been denounced by rights organizations worldwide for his alleged personal involvement in individual cases of murder, torture, and other rights abuses, won an earlier civil case against Orlov in which the Memorial director was forced to pay a fine. Kadyrov then promised to stop suing human rights activists after he was criticized by his mother for disrespecting his elders. With Tuesday’s announcement, that promise appears to have been broken. Radio Free Liberty/Radio Europe reports on the Russian federal government’s misunderstanding of human rights organizations:

Well-known Russian rights activist Svetlana Gannushkina says the federal government is ignorant about the operations of human rights groups in the North ...

The Other Russia: More Russians See A Cult Of Personality Around Putin

More Russians See a Cult of Personality Around Putin

Update 07/10/10: Several misprinted figures have been corrected.

The number of Russian citizens who see signs of a cult of personality surrounding Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has been growing consistently over the past several years. According to the results from a survey by the Levada Center research institute, 27% of Russians feel that "yes, all the signs of a cult of personality are there,” and another 28% say that "there still isn’t one, but there are more and more preconditions for one.” Researchers believe that the growth comes as a result of the fact that Russians no longer have a negative view of the idea of a cult of personality itself.

A full third of respondents, 33%, said that "no, there are no signs of such a cult,” while 12% were unsure.

Just four years ago, only 10% of Russians noted a cult of personality around Vladimir Putin at all. "The growth is definitely impressive,” said ...

The Other Russia: Esquire Magazine: Sochi’s Olympic Road As Caviar

Esquire Magazine: Sochi’s Olympic Road as Caviar

One of the most staggering figures in the already controversial cost of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics is that of a brand-new road between the town of Adler and the mountainous Krasnaya Polyana: $8 billion in all. For comparison, the total amount of money spent on the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver was $1.5 billion.

Plans for the Sochi games have been criticized by environmental activists, scientists, human rights advocates, and other experts for a host of problems that ranges from unpaid and abused construction workers to irreparable damage to Sochi’s unique natural environment. Dr. Sergei Volkov, who fled Russia out of fear of persecution, has voiced concerns particularly about the road in question. "It’s a potentially dangerous area,” he said. "There have been big landslides in the past and there are large deposits of mercury, uranium and other potentially dangerous minerals. But all scientific advice is being ignored.”

While any potential geological disasters are still, thankfully, only theoretical, the money ...

KC: BASLER ZEITUNG: ''Russia Is The Most Sinister Country In Europe''

BASLER ZEITUNG: ''Russia is the most sinister country in Europe''

Publication time: 16 July 2010, 16:31

The Swiss newspaper Basler Zeitung published an article entitled "The most sinister country in Europe" (Das finsterste Land in Europa) about the brutalities of Russian occupation and terrorist gangs on the territory of the Caucasus Emirate. These terrorists are being eliminated by Mujahideen in the Caucasian Jihad. The article says in particular:

"Russia has been condemned by the European Court of Human Rights more than 150 times for roughest human rights violations. 300 cases are still pending.

Up till now, Strasbourg judges condemned Moscow for disappearance and murder of the total number of about 200 Chechens.

"It's a sad record," said Roemer Lemaitre from the human rights organization Russian Justice Initiative, which helps many Chechens with their claims in Strasbourg.

"Russia has been condemned for infringing the basic right to protection of life more often than all other 46 members of the Council of Europe together".

The perpetrators remain unpunished in Russia. Most alarming for the Council of Europe is the fact ...
