According to police, the man, who is thought to be a foreigner, was arrested in London on June 21, and was handed over to immigration officials two days later. Berezovsky spoke to RFE/RL Russian Service correspondent Mikhail Sokolov about the alleged plot, which he says he was warned about earlier by friends. RFE/RL: Did you in fact hide from a hired killer somewhere outside England? Boris Berezovsky: Yes, Scotland Yard recommended that I leave the country and wait until the situation is resolved. So that's what happened; after a week they called me and said that I could come back. RFE/RL: From media reports, it's impossible to understand what in fact took place. Was the person who was preparing to assassinate ... >> full

The murder of the former KGB man Alexander Litvinenko was “undeniably state-sponsored terrorism on Moscow’s part. That is the view at the highest levels of the British government”. This official had access to the latest police and intelligence findings, and he was reflecting the views of senior Home Office counter-terrorism officials, Scotland Yard detectives and others with close knowledge of the murder investigation. All confirmed last week that they believe the plot to poison Litvinenko in London last year was ordered by the Russian secret service, the FSB. In Moscow, strong words were also being used. Russian security circles wanted to intensify the “new cold war” with Britain caused by the ... >> full

Bush Still Doesn't Get It

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 7/23/2007 3:15 AM Bush Still Doesn't Get It By Akbar Ahmed Sunday, July 22, 2007; B01 Here's a bit of modern-day heresy: President Bush actually has some rather sound instincts about the Muslim world. He has visited mosques more often than any of his predecessors, and he frequently talks of winning Muslim hearts and minds. So why are those hearts and minds so estranged today? What went wrong? The problem is that Bush has relied on ill-informed advisers and out-of-touch experts. By substituting their false expertise for his own sensible intuitions, he has failed to understand the Muslim world -- which means he has failed to understand the arena in which the first post-9/11 presidency will be judged. Instead of seriously explaining Muslim societies that are profoundly split in complex ways, Bush's aides have offered a fatally flawed stereotype of Islam as monolithic and violent. These missteps have helped squander the potential goodwill of people in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan -- countries that pose major ... >> full

The spy business Basil Ince Monday, July 23rd 2007 Many may recall the picture of Alexander Litvinenko lying on his death bed in a London hospital last November. His plight did not attract world attention because he had eaten something out of a can and was dying of ptomaine poisoning. Mr Litvinenko, a former Russian secret service agent, was in that position because a person or persons unknown had administered him a large dose of radioactive isotope plutonium 210. The spy business is indeed a dangerous profession, but what grabbed attention was Litvinenko's implicating Vladimir Putin, the Russian president. At the time of his death, the former FSB (successor to the KGB) agent, had been investigating the killing of Anna Politkovskaya, a journalist. Politkovskaya had written articles uncomplimentary to Mr Putin. Litvinenko himself had authored a book, Blowing up Russia: Terror from Within, an expose of how the spy service had orchestrated apartment block bombings responsible for the deaths of over 300 people in Russia in 1999. The bombings ... >> full
