Berdy Ура-патриот: flag-waver, jingoist Love of one's land, people and way of life has certainly existed in Russia for as long as there have been Russians. Patriotism, however, is a relatively new word. The word itself, патриотизм, came to Russian from the Greek via French, either during the reign of Peter the Great or a few decades later -- once loyalty to the local grand prince was replaced by loyalty to the emperor and country. There are a few native Russian words for "love of the fatherland," although they are all quite archaic: отчизнолюбивый, отчизнолюб, отчизник. These are so old fashioned your Russian friends would blink if you used them; even the spell-checker doesn't recognize them. So we've really only got патриотизм and патриот. What do they mean to Russians? Good question. On one web site a young person writes, это чувство гордости за свою страну (it's a feeling of pride in one's ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 7/29/2005 3:58 AM Jule, 28, 2005 “Search, to whom it is favorable” The throw of the grenade accomplished by Vladimir Arutyunyan during the speech of George Bush in the square of Tbilisi can be named to be an attempt at the American president only conditionally. It was almost impossible for Bush and Saakashvili to turn out to be among possible victims from the explosion of the grenade in the square, as they were behind bulletproof glass. Also the attempting could not expect to kill Bush. Judging by the arsenal found at him and his actions during the detention, Arutyunyan had representation about characteristics of weapon, and he had skills of it. The incident in the Tbilisi square was an attempt of an act of terrorism, with a plenty of victims among civilians, thus, the terrorist had no task to kill the presidents. The reaction of Russia and Armenia to the detention of the terrorist by the Georgian special services reminds a saying: “An ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 7/2/2005 6:54 AM A letter to the edition One Russian nation actually does not exist. The mentality of the population is rather different depending on the standard of living and the place of residing. The Central Russian, Littoral, and Siberian mentalities differ from each other more, than from mentality of a native of the same district. It is felt sharply enough in big collectives, in armies, for example, where Moscow Russians-soldiers, as a rule, are slighted by the ones from other districts. There are intense attitudes between inhabitants of the rural regions and cities. Now it is practically possible to speak about class stratification of the country and an enough strong one. Rural regions are practically poor in comparison with the city ones, which, at least, have an opportunity of sale of their property, in case of sharp necessity for means. In rural districts houses are forsaken and population leaves for cities to live though somehow. A huge quantity of the declassed element lives ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 7/2/2005 7:19 AM «The primordial Russian lands…» The content of one of the Russian directories of cities and countries is rather characteristic. We read the letter "G": "Gorbatov, a city in the Nizhniy Novgorod region…" " Gorodishche , a city in the Penza region…" "Gorohovets, a city in the Vladimir region…" "Groznyy, a Russian city in the Northern Caucasus on the Chechen plain…" The constantly repeated reminder about Djohar (Groznyy) as about a Russian city in Russian sources and with lips of the Russian representatives is like a spell, which is giving out uncertainty in correctness of the authors and instigators of this myth. When zombied with the official propagation Russians are said, that "primordially Russian city Groznyy" was built on the site of Chechen villages burnt by Russians, and listed the names of these villages, they usually close their ears with fingers and turn on another spell: "The Chechen Republic is a primordial part of Russia ". It is senseless to argue about “primordiality” of the ... >> full
