In a deeply poignant scene she fantasises that the paraphernalia of film-making has once more been assembled for her big moment. “All right, Mr DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.” President Vladimir Putin of Russia seemed to be going through a similar moment of self-deceiving nostalgia when he warned the West last week that he would return to the former practice of targeting his country’s nuclear weapons on European cities. What role did he think he was playing? Nikita Khrushchev, circa 1962? It is a long time since we needed to give serious thought to Russian missiles hurtling ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/10/2007 7:09 AM 09 06 2007 What Purposes Are Pursued, Selfish or Religious? It is known in the whole Moslem world that there are people, which on behalf of the religion gather money. That Money, according to their words, collected for the building of mosques, Islamic schools, education of students or for any other needs of Moslems. Among these people there are truthful people, who really prove their words, but there are those, who deceive the philanthropists. In the republic of Adigeya also there are people, who gather the money on behalf of Moslems and Islam in order to help Moslems. However, problem is in the fact that in the same time some of the adiga people (circassians), who carry out the collection of funds on behalf of the Moslems of Adigeya, are not trustworthy. In other words, they are deceivers and plunderers of the property of Moslems. That people apply for material help to circassians of Syria, Turkey, Jordan, Israel and other ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/11/2007 12:38 AM Published: 10-06-2007 Pouting Putin JAN Grzebski slipped out of a 19-year coma a couple of months ago and last weekend began talking to the Polish media about his future-shock experience. Mr. Grzebski has woken up to a post-communist world where the store shelves are stocked with a variety of products, not just the same old socialist staples. The recovering former railway worker also described his morning routine in an interview: "I wake up at 7 a.m. and I watch TV." Of course, if Mr. Grzebski has been watching the news lately, then perhaps he feels right at home in the post-Soviet era. Because it sounds an awful lot like the Soviet era, with a dark and menacing Russia breathing fire at the West. On the eve of the G8 summit in Germany last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin rattled his sabre – and some cages – with his threat to target missiles at Western Europe once again. This is his latest response to ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/12/2007 12:18 AM Policy Watch: Moscow's Mideast hopes Published: June 11, 2007 at 10:24 AM By MARK N. KATZ WASHINGTON, June 11 (UPI) -- Under Vladimir Putin, Russia has pursued three main goals in the Middle East: first, to prevent the United States from becoming the predominant power there; second, to prevent the Middle East (and broader Muslim world) from sympathizing with and supporting Chechen rebels and other Islamic opposition movements in Russia and elsewhere in the former Soviet Union; and third, to make money for Russian enterprises through expanding their investments in and exports to the Middle East. Recently, Russia has been attempting to pursue all three of these goals through establishing and maintaining friendly relations with all Middle Eastern governments simultaneously, including those that are anti-American, pro-American, and/or opposed to one another. Thus, while Russia maintains good relations with anti-American regimes in Iran and Syria, it has also established friendly relations with pro-American ones in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt and elsewhere. ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/12/2007 3:07 AM The Big Lies June 11, 2007: Russians have been rewriting their own history, more so than most nations, for a long time. The most recent example is their current attitude towards the Cold War, how it ended, and the legacy of 70 years of communist tyranny. Because most Russians, especially the leaders, have not accepted the Soviet Union as a truly evil institution, it's possible for many Russians to blame the collapse of the Soviet Union, and end of the Cold War, on the missteps of Soviet leaders, especially the last head of the Soviet empire, Mikhail Gorbachev. However, most Russians go with the, "we just got tired of the incompetent Soviet bureaucrats and shed them" explanation. Either way, most Russians have not come to terms with no longer being one of the world's two superpowers. Russia today is a much diminished version of the Soviet Union. The population of 140 million is shrinking because of a plunging ... >> full
