Recommend Message 1 of 1 in Discussion From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/17/2005 7:08 AM Anatoly Chubais on Putin, Khodorkovsky, SPS 17.06.05 Friday By Yevgeny Kiselev, Moskovskie Novosti editor-in-chief While Anatoly Chubais sees all the flaws and shortfalls of Russia's ruling establishment, he does not refuse to cooperate with it - at least with the part thereof that is ideologically close to the Union of Right Forces (SPS) Anatoly Chubais was interviewed by Yevgeny Kiselev, Moskovskie Novosti editor-in-chief, the day the sentence was delivered for Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev. What do you think about this harsh sentence? I find it gruesome. I don't understand what objective it is supposed to achieve. I don't understand the necessity, the expediency - strategic or tactical - of such a stiff penalty. Frankly speaking, I don't even want to delve into the charges, collate them with the articles of the Criminal Code. My basic position has not changed: From the very outset I have been categorically opposed to Khodorkovsky's arrest, and ... >> full

Complete and Utter Nonsense

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/19/2005 1:36 AM Complete and Utter Nonsense Friday, June 17, 2005. Issue 3189. Page 8. By Michele A. Berdy Ахинея: nonsense, folderol, claptrap, bunk One of the great things about linguistic study is that you can spend three hours on the phone talking about BS, and it's all in the name of scholarship. A Russian translator friend calls, wondering how best to translate the word "bullshit" into Russian, and before you know it, you've discussed etymology, dipped into several scholarly tomes, checked out Internet chats, done comparative studies of derivations and connotations in Russian and English and concluded that this is a topic worthy of a Ph.D. dissertation. In other words, you can have a serious bull session about bull and write it off as a work-related expense. Sure beats punching a time clock. Although the English "bullshit" packs a wallop, I vote for Russian expressions: They are definitely more colorful and far more literate. Take the meaning of BS as a verb: "to deceive ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/20/2005 7:11 AM «It is also a punishment for sins» "Well. What can be said about hepatitis"... The epidemic of hepatitis has covered central Russia . Rzhev, Smolensk , Vologda , Oryol, Moscow ... The quantity of patients increases more and more, there are no enough places in hospitals, and as it has always been in this country, authorities carefully conceal statistics of the epidemic and already search for the "spies" informing the "Caucasus-center" about it, despite of secrecy... Probably, this epidemic has some reason. Eventually, it is unimportant, where the infection comes from: whether from beer, or from lemonade of a local factory, or from the Volga , on which there is Rzhev, from which rusty pipe it has poured out... The more important thing is that the events in Rzhev and other cities have, as well as a lot in modern Russia , a mystical sense. It is not simply an epidemic, not simply a medical and sanitary-and-epidemiologic fact. It ... >> full

rom: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/20/2005 4:08 PM June, 21, 2005 The Way to Slavery. Double III Our remarkable compatriot Peter Chaadaev almost 200 years ago stated the idea, that Russia , probably, has the historical role to be a certain lesson for other peoples, showing what should not be done anyway. It looks like we continue to play this role for all these 200 years with masochism eagerness. Another outstanding thinker, Austrian economist Fridrih fon Hayek, when he was writing his well-known "The Way to Slavery" (this book has just been republished in Russian), certainly, could not even imagine, that except for two ways to slavery, described by him - fascism and communism - there could be one more, by which they would lead people under the banners of fon Hayek and with his name on their lips. In one of Vladimir Putin's cabinets there is a bust of fon Hayek. It is not only for recruitment of foreign investors, who sometimes visit this cabinet. Vladimir Putin ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/24/2005 7:24 PM The hostages were doomed The other day I have received some letters-responses to the article "Ours kill ours" , published earlier on the site of the agency "Caucasus-center". From all letters, my interest was attracted by Inna Smith's critical response from Britain , in which our dear reader returns us to the question about participation of the Russian special services in the Beslan events. I shall remind that this question was actively discussed by some people some time ago in different Chechen editions. Madam Smith thinks that there is a discrepancy in the article "Ours kill ours" and she asks to answer the questions, which have already become sacral: why did the saboteurs decided to carry out the operation in Beslan, knowing what was the result of the similar operation in the "Northeast"; and why did Basaev incur the responsibility for this operation. The desire of reader Smith is quite understandable. For example, I also have a desire to find out, ... >> full
