Window on Eurasia: ‘The Youngest Desert in the World is Where the Aral Sea Used to Be’

Vienna, April 10 – Where the Aral Sea once was, Central Asians are saying, there has appeared “the youngest desert in the world, the Aralkum,” and as a result, the people living near it are suffering and the countries around it are increasingly being drawn into serious conflicts over ever scarcer water resources.
In an article in Kyrgyzstan’s “Khabar” news agency this week, Valentin Rakhmanov says that those who thought that only conflicts like the Cold War competition between the Soviet bloc and the West could wipe off the map significant geographic locations are being proved wrong by what is happening in Central Asia now (www.centrasia.ru/news.php?st=1239271800).

Vienna, April 9 – Moscow is unlikely to follow the demand of one Russian churchman and declare Amway an “extremist” organization, but the way the Russian government compiles its ever-lengthening list of “extremist materials” guarantees any number of constitutional and legal absurdities, according to a Russian lawyer.
In an analysis posted online this week, Pavel Protasov describes the way in which the list of extremist materials is currently being compiled and updated – the last update is available at www.minjust.ru/ru/activity/nko/fedspisok/ – in order to show why this should be but isn’t an April Fool’s joke (www.chaskor.ru/p.php?id=5134).

On November 23, 2008, our elder brother, an honest and noble Mujahid, Abu Murat Sultan son of Aslan-Bek Sultan-Ali (Sosnaliyev) passed away.

He always wanted to die in combat, but by the will of the Most High, his death was caused by an illness.

Window on Eurasia: Russian Military Failing to Meet Quotas for Professional Soldiers

Vienna, April 2 – A major reason that the Russian military is having to draft so many soldiers this spring is that the uniformed services are failing to meet their quotas for recruiting professional soldiers, a shortcoming that experts say reflects both the low salaries they are now offered and the low status of the profession Moscow would like to recruit them to.
The Moscow media have been full of stories about why the spring draft is so large, with most commentators pointing to the change in the length of military service for draftees, and why this round is so filled with problems, ranging from the declining size of the draft pool to the difficulties of the current economic situation.

Moldova blast hits gas supplies

Ageing pipelines and equipment often disrupt gas supplies in the ex-Soviet countries [File: AFP]

An explosion has damaged a gas pipeline in Moldova, cutting supplies to some eastern European nations by about 40 per cent.

The "accident" occurred on Wednesday in the country's breakaway Transdniestr region.

The blast caused a crater measuring more than 110sq metres and could be heard 10km away, Liliana Puscasu, a spokesman for the region's emergency situations department, said.

"This accident ... is linked to the fact that the age of this pipeline has exceeded 30 years," the de facto interior ministry of Transdniestr said on its website.

Gazprom, the Russian gas supplier, regularly suffers from supply disruptions due to the age of pipelines and other equipment across the former Soviet Union.

"The volume of the gas reduction is around 40 percent. Gas deliveries are being carried out through parallel gas pipelines," Gazprom said in a statement.

The blast destroyed one of the three pipelines used to supply natural gas to the Balkans.
