Commentary by Andrei Piontkovsky The former Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky has told the British daily, The Guardian, he is plotting the violent overthrow of President Vladimir Putin from his base in Britain after forging close contacts with members of Russia's ruling elite. In his April 13th interview, the multi-millionaire claimed he was already bankrolling people close to the president who are conspiring to mount a palace coup. "We need to use force to change the regime," he said. "It isn't possible to change this regime through democratic means. There can be no change without force, pressure." Asked if he was effectively fomenting a revolution, Berezovsky said: "You are absolutely correct." In the 1930s, Leon Trotsky repeated, in numerous interviews for Western newspapers and radio stations, that he had a vast number of supporters in the Soviet Union, including military personnel, secret policemen and members ... >> full

Now, Putin's rumored third term looks set to become the central issue of another key vote -- the ballot for the State Duma in December 2007. Sergei Mironov -- the freshly reelected speaker of the Federation Council and the leader of the young pro-Kremlin party A Just Russia -- suggested in late March that the Russian Constitution be amended to extend the president's time in office from two to three consecutive terms. He also proposed that the length of each term be increased to between five and seven years. "Four years is a very short term for Russia," he said. A third term for Putin, he added, "is the desire of millions of Russians and should be discussed publicly." 'Why should we model ... >> full

Everyone wants a patron saint. "It's like a wave we are witnessing," he said. He pulled out a recent letter from the church's patriarch, Alexy II, approving a request from Rus, a special forces police unit long involved in controversial counterterrorism operations in Chechnya, that the legendary 13th-century military commander and saint Alexander Nevsky be named its patron. Nevsky was already the patron saint of the FSB, Russia's internal security service. By Mary Dejevsky Published: 20 April 2007 Why are we asking this now? Boris Berezovsky is a Russian multi-millionaire living in exile in Britain. An assiduous self-publicist and ferocious critic of President Putin, he is once again basking in the limelight after telling a newspaper that he was fomenting a revolution to oust the Russian president. The immediate response of the Russian authorities was to lodge a formal complaint with the British government, via their ambassador in London, demanding that Berezovsky's political asylum status be revoked. This was swiftly followed by a letter from Russia's general prosecutor to the Home Office and an arrest warrant, charging that Berezovsky had called for the overthrow of Russia's legitimate government by force. Any delay in acting on this, the Russian ambassador warned, could affect bilateral relations. Who is Berezovsky, really? Berezovsky is the archetypal, perhaps even the original, Russian oligarch. ... >> full
