KC: Jihad And Security Tips

Jihad and security tips

Publication time: 18 March 2009, 21:32

In internet forums you can quite often read posts like "I want to go to Jihad, who will help me? Where can we meet?" They are posted either by agent provocateurs from security services, or by sincere, but naive Muslims. And we want to address this work to such [naive] brothers.

Jihad is a personal duty, but, as prayer, it demands fulfilling of certain conditions. What will we say about a man who stands for prayer in trunks, in a filthy place and without performing an ablution, [and who is] justifying it by the fact that the prayer is obligatory and the time has come? But some brothers, who have realized the obligation of Jihad, allow themselves to spend much time in front of a computer display, while they do not prepare themselves at all morally, physically and intellectually to the war in Allah's path.

At the same time, today's Jihad is a surveillance and sabotage activity, which, in ...

Window on Eurasia: Moscow’s Anti-Crisis Measures Exacerbating Disparities among Russia’s Regions

Paul Goble

Vienna, March 18 – Even before the onset of the current economic crisis, per capita incomes varied widely not only between Moscow and the rest of the country but also among the regions and republics themselves, a situation that most people were prepared to tolerate as long as unemployment was low and incomes rising.
But now that the number of jobless is increasing in many places and incomes are falling, fewer people are willing to put up with this pattern, especially if they are among the “losers.” And, according to the editors of “Nezavimaya gazeta,” the Russian government is not only making this situation worse but is creating conditions for new challenges to itself.
In an unsigned lead article published in yesterday’s edition, the editors of the independent Moscow newspaper argued that both “the crisis and the clumsy actions of the powers that be have given birth to new disproportions among the subjects ...

Window on Eurasia: Most Russians Support the Ideas of the Nationalists But Aren’t Ready to Act on Them, Polls Show

Paul Goble

Vienna, March 18 – A majority of Russians now openly sympathize with nationalist groups that advocate a “Russia for the Russians,” but most of these sympathizers, a prominent Russian sociologist says, do not approve in using violence against minorities and are not prepared to follow the lead of those who advocate precisely that.
The reason for this apparent paradox, Lev Gudkov, the head of Moscow’s Levada Center, told Maksim Karasyov of the “New Times” magazine, is to be found in the sources of these nationalistic attitudes, on the one hand, and the relations between radical nationalist groups and the government, on the other (newtimes.ru/magazine/2009/issue106/doc-60746.html).
The nationalistic attitudes of the population, he suggested, are “to a large extent provoked” by the government itself and the media it controls, both of which feature “anti-Western rhetoric, declarations about [Russia’s] special path and special values, an aggressive foreign ...

Window on Eurasia: How the Soviet System Rather than Communist Propaganda Created ‘Believers of a New Type’

Paul Goble

Vienna, March 18 – With the opening of some archives at the end of the Soviet period, Russian specialists on religious life in the USSR focused on what some call “the history of decrees,” the specific orders that Communist officials gave concerning religious life, and the responses to those orders by leaders of the country’s various religious communities.
But now that approach is giving way to a broader social history of religion in the Soviet period, one that focuses not so much on Communist directives than on the consequences of modernization and societal transformation on religious life, an approach that helps explain how the Soviet system created “believers of a new type” with whom Russians still have to deal. At a seminar at Moscow’s St. Tikhon Humanitarian University last fall, the stenographic record of which has just been published, Aleksey Beglov, a senior researcher at the ...
