Armenia should recognize Abkhazia’s independence, UCP leader says

"The sooner different states recognize Abkhazia’s independence, the sooner it’ll have a positive impact both on Karabakh and the South Ossetia,” the leader of the Armenian United Communist Party Yura Manukyan told a press conference today.

"Despite amiable relations with Georgia, Armenia should recognize Abkhazia’s independence, taking the path Russia shows,” he said.

Anyway, we shouldn’t act hastily: we still face NKR issue and Russia should show its attitude towards the future developments of Karabakh conflict.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia tied to the Nagorno Karabakh

"It is possible that in the nearest future Armenia will recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia”, -Yuri Manukyan, the head of the United Communistic Party, thinks. Today on the press conference he said that recognition of those two countries will have a serious influence over the destiny of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.

"About Georgia’s friendship we know long before. We remember that in 90s the only little window leaf was left by Iran. We were in blockade from 4 sides”, - he recalled and added that we should take the road Russia points us.

According to Yu. Manukyan, Armenia should recognize the independence of Abkhazia without hurry.

"It shouldn’t be done hastily as we still have the Karabakh issue and Russia has to show its attitude towards the future developments of that issue.”

Timoshenko: Ukraine threatened by dictatorship

Publication time: 22 February 2010, 23:05

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko is refusing to recognize Viktor Yanukovich as the next president of Ukraine, claiming that he is seeking to establish an anti-Ukrainian dictatorship. In a televised address to the nation on Monday, Timoshenko issued a call for a coalition of patriotic and democratic forces to oppose the man who defeated her in the February 7th presidential election.

In strong and uncompromising terms, Yulia Timoshenko accused president-elect Viktor Yanukovich of serving the interests of oligarchs whose demand for cheap labor keeps ordinary Ukrainians impoverished and without rights.

The prime minister said that many of the oligarchs live abroad and have been stealing Ukraine's wealth for the past 18 years. Timoshenko added that her opponent's political team makes no effort to conceal its contempt for the Ukrainian language and culture, and that it has already taken steps to privatize the country's natural gas pipeline system.

The prime minister said she filed a court case against Yanukovich to ...

Window on Eurasia: ‘Hidden Hunger’ an Increasing Problem for Russia, Experts Say

Paul Goble

Vienna, February 21 – While few people in Russia are starving, many are not getting the vitamins and minerals they need because, as a result of declining incomes, they are forced to stop purchasing fruits, vegetables, and meat, something officials do not want to discuss but that experts say constitutes "hidden hunger” among many groups in the population.
In an article on the "Krestyanskiye vedomosti” portal, Ilya Dashkovsky says that even those who heatedly deny that there is real hunger in Russia – something many experts say exists as well – "do not deny that Russians are not getting a large amount of necessary vitamins and microelements (www.agronews.ru/newsshow.php?NId=57409).
For example, he points out, medical specialists say that Russians should be consuming on average 22 kilograms of fish every year but that they are in fact eating only 13 kilograms, with many groups, including pensioners, the 24.5 million officially poor, and the residents ...
