Vienna, February 18 – At least some of those venerated by the Russian Orthodox Church as “the new martyrs” because they died at the hands of the Soviet regime do not deserve to be canonized because they either agreed to act as informers for the secret police or denounced their own faith in the hope of leniency, according to a priest now involved in researching these cases. Speaking to a church conference this week, Father Superior Damaskin said that “far from every individual who suffered for the faith in Soviet times can be elevated to the rank of the saints” because canonization requires an examination of an individual’s entire life rather than only one moment of it (www.annews.ru/news/detail.php?ID=178269). And unfortunately, he continued, many who were tortured or even were killed because of their faith or position in the Church had agreed to act as informers or ... >> full

But both media reports about meetings that have occurred and other research suggest that young Russians are increasingly ready to join public protests and will be even more often as the crisis deepens and the weather warms. And to head this off, the government is already taking measures to prevent that trend from leading to an explosion. The All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM), a polling agency known to be close to the Kremlin, reported this week that its latest poll shows only one Russian in ... >> full

Vienna, February 19 – The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Russia has entered a new and more dangerous phase not only because the infections are spreading not just among intravenous drug users but throughout the entire population and because the government has not adopted some of the more aggressive treatment strategies now being used in many Western countries. Yesterday, Gennady Onishchenko, Russia’s chief public health official, said that the total number of HIV-infected people in his country since the first infection in 1987 amounts to 467,016, a figure that most other Russian experts and the World Health Organization say is far too low (medportal.ru/mednovosti/news/2009/02/17/hiv/). In the last year alone, Onishchenko continued, the number of new infections, identified in the course of some 24 million HIV tests, rose by 50,670. And he said that of those whose infections had developed into full-blown AIDS since 1987, 31,636 had died prematurely, again ... >> full
