The policy of Russia: First - a robbery, then - blackmail
Publication time: 29 January 2007, 17:56
The essence of Russian imperialism is rather many-sided. One of its displays is the policy of economic expansion and blackmail in relation to former colonies of Russia which is combined with the impudent open robbery of the oppressed peoples.

It is clearly visible on an example of Ukrainian-Russian attitudes in the field of energetics, which from the first days of declaration of independence of Ukraine are accompanied by economic blackmail.

Oil and gas which Russia subdued from the real owners of these resources, - native people of the occupied territories of empire, on whose ground their extraction is carried out, this became the powerful lever of influence on the Ukrainian authority that allows Russia to dictate the conditions, both in economic, and in political sphere.

(TASS)
January 31, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- The race for the March 2008 Russian presidential election, while yet to officially begin, appears to already have a frontrunner.

Polls conducted in January indicate that First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev -- the closest St. Petersburg associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin -- has become the second-most popular politician in the country, after the president.

With a current approval rating of 18-24 percent, Medvedev surpasses his closest rival, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov.

Medvedev capped his success at home with an international debut at last week's World Economic Forum in Davos. The delegation he headed was mainly made up of members of the so-called liberal wing of the Russian government. With him, among others, were Economic Development and Trade Minister German Gref and the head of the Unified ...

DO RUSSIANS LIKE THEIR GOVERNMENT? During a briefing at RFE/RL's Washington office on November 15, Richard Rose, director of the Center for the Study of Public Policy at the University of Aberdeen, discussed the results of 14 surveys he has conducted since 1992 on Russian public opinion about democracy and the country's development. He discussed the implications of these opinions for relations with the West and for Russia's 2008 presidential election.

Poland still sees political motives behind ban on exports to Russia -ambassador

MOSCOW.  Feb  6  (Interfax)  -  Poland  is  still  inclined  to see
political  motives  behind  the embargo on imports of Polish products to
Russia and  expects that, thanks to experts' inspections, Russia and the
European  Commission will manage to find a way out of the crisis, Polish
Ambassador to Russia Jerzy Bahr told journalists in Moscow on Tuesday.
"Don't  consider it propaganda, but if a technical problem persists
this long,  it  begins  to  assume a political dimension. Inspections in
Poland are  underway,  and  they are being conducted by specialists from
Russia and the European Union. They are very important," he said.
Exports  of  Polish  products  to  Russia  are  beneficial  to both
countries,  Bahr  said.  He  insisted  that the problem is not bilateral
because  it  affects  the  relationship  between Russia and the European
Union, as Poland is an EU member.
Asked  whether  Poland  could lift its veto on talks between Moscow
and Brussels  on  a  new  ...
