It's been a lot of hard work, but Russian President Vladimir Putin has finally achieved his goal. He's cleaned up the mess left behind by Yeltsin, put together a strong and thriving economy, and restored Russia to a place of honor among the community of nations.

His legacy has already been written. He's the man who rebuilt Russia. The last thing he wants now, is a pointless confrontation with the United States. But how can it be avoided? He understands Washington's long-range plans for Russia and he is taking necessary steps to preempt them. He is familiar with the heavyweights of US foreign policy, like Zbigniew Brzezinski, and has undoubtedly read his master plan for Central Asia, “The Grand Chessboard.”

Brzezinski's recent article in Foreign Affairs (A publication of the Council on Foreign Relations), “A Geostrategy for Eurasia,” summarizes his views ...

What Goes Around, Comes Around
December 24, 2007: The secret police have taken over the country, or so it appears. President Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer, and former head of the post-Soviet Union FSB, has brought in hundreds of former KGB men and put them in key positions throughout the government. This should not be surprising, as during the Soviet era, if you wanted to make it big, you joined the KGB (secret police, a sort of combined CIA/FBI that was a law unto itself). Putin has gained control of the legislature via his political party, and backed a presidential candidate (presidents can only serve two terms) who likes the idea of appointing Putin as prime minister (the guy who does most of the day-to-day work running the country, under the orders of the president).

The KGB has shrunk considerably to become the present day FSB, and many of those without jobs in the secret police don't mind, ...

Farewell to the Past

Farewell to the Past
The end of the year has brought us two fantastic gifts: Fidel Castro’s retirement from power and Yulia Timoshenko’s return to power as Ukraine’s prime minister.

I was born when bearded Fidel Castro swept into Havana, expropriating hotels run by businessmen who wanted to turn Cuba into a tourist and cane paradise. Dictator Batista was a bastard all right. He took bribes, debauched, but he had never swanked in a sort of Stalin-like shirt and had never sent away prostitutes to a croc-infested, swampy small island off Cuba. What a crazy thing to do! And, mind, that was done by the young Fidel, the very young and then very good-looking guy whose photos - along with Hemingway’s - adorned homes of practically every “progressive” Soviet family. The mere mention of this horrible fact is still enough to make hair stand up on the back of my neck. Castro, not to mention Papa Hemingway ...
